Wildlife Area
Explore the abundance of New Zealand's natural environment at Orokonui Ecosanctuary, a pest-free reserve just 20 minutes north of Dunedin. Take the chance to see some of the country's rarest birds, plants, and reptiles in one of South Island's best-protected and managed sanctuaries. Walk through the remarkable forest of carefully maintained and biologically diverse plant life and look out for jeweled geckos, kiwis, kakas, and Otago stink. The staff take great pride in showing visitors the park on guided tours, and giving tips and educational lessons at the visitor center. Alternatively, you can walk through at your own pace without a guide. Put Orokonui Ecosanctuary on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Dunedin vacation planner.

  • The sanctuary is a must for bird watchers and anyone who'd like to see what the South Island bush looked like a long time ago. Well managed and tracks maintained, staff friendly and knowledgeable. The...  more »
  • The location is beautiful, animals so friendly and staff wonderful. Had an hour walk and conversation with a bird feeder we bumped into on the track, let us feed birds with him! Awesome experience!  more »

  • Passionate people care for native birds and plants. One can spend as much time one has at a minimum cost. Good education and entertainment for kids and adults alike. Weather dependent as it is outdoor activity. Book a tour with a guide to get the best out of time. If you are very short of time, just remember that the guide will leave you at the other end at the end of tour. Allow at least half hour extra to walk back in your tour plan. Don't miss this one.
  • Great experience every time we visit the sanctuary. My husband is a photography enthusiast and was able to take beautiful shots of the birds and lizards. I was unable to walk and stayed in the cafe to enjoy their delicious hot drinks while coloring in my book.
  • Excellent opportunity to see endemic bird species up close. Loved seeing the Kaka...such intelligent birds! First class facility worthy of support. Glad to see cruise ship passengers can easily visit this sanctuary on shore excursions from Port Chalmers.
  • Gorgeous birds and native forest. Saw takahe up close which was very exciting.
  • Beautiful hillside hideaway with well-maintained paths. Wander through the sanctuary and enjoy the greenery and serene vistas. Listen for birdsong and bliss out. Very reasonable entrance fee and supports a good cause.
