4.1/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web
Take in the 19th-century opulence and gorgeous gardens at Larnach Castle & Gardens, one of the largest mansions in New Zealand. Built in 1871 by politician and businessman William Larnach, the massive building has been gradually restored to its original splendor. Today, visitors can walk around the mansion to learn tales of scandalous history and to see sweeping views from the towers. The castle's sprawling grounds, named one of five Gardens of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, include native and exotic plants and a number of specialized gardens, such as the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, and the Alice Lawn. • Beautiful grounds and very well kept castle. Price of castle self guided tour is pretty steep except for special events like Peninsula Day (half price). Exceptional views and history.
  • Such a beautiful, well looked after and peaceful place to spend the afternoon. Just went through the gardens and the views were terrific. The ticket operator kind of spoiled it though. I think I'm pretty proficient with my English, to the point where people can understand me. I asked for 4 garden-only passes, 1 paying separately and 3 paying together. Should have been easy enough, but took a good 5 minutes to get it right, all the while telling me I need to be quicker as I need to "keep this place moving." Really now? That sounds more like your job than mine. Terrible customer service (I work in CS) from this gentleman and as the only person to have met on the trip, 4 stars.
  • Special castle in Otago. I book ticket from Bookme. And its really worth. You can pay $5 to get Ipod that will tell you whole information about the castle. After castle tour you can go garden to see lots of flower. Finally you can go the Cafe' in castle to get some dining.
  • The old bald guy at the gate with glasses is an absolute disgrace. Very rude and obnoxious. Very bad with that man as the first person to greet your guests. If hes so unhappy why doesnt he quit and stop being a cantankerous old prick
  • We stayed in the stables and the rate included a tour of the property. We also ate dinner that night. The food was good and the experience was very fun (a bit Downton Abbey). Unfortunately, the evening was a spoiled by another guest who required all the attention from the table, which prevented us from sharing the experience with others.
