Castle Historic Site
Take in the 19th-century opulence and gorgeous gardens at Larnach Castle & Gardens, one of the largest mansions in New Zealand. Built in 1871 by politician and businessman William Larnach, the massive building has been gradually restored to its original splendor. Today, visitors can walk around the mansion to learn tales of scandalous history and to see sweeping views from the towers. The castle's sprawling grounds, named one of five Gardens of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, include native and exotic plants and a number of specialized gardens, such as the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, and the Alice Lawn. • The Castle and its history was very interesting - can get congested with visitors. But the color display on the grounds was spectacular. Rock Garden was well done  more »
  • In a country with few historical buildings of any great age, it was interesting to look around this castle built in the 1870s. Not actually a castle, but a grand country house with crenelations - it h...  more »

  • Beautiful manor of a rich man in the late-1800s (not a king's castle). Unlike other castles, this manor provides an up close experience to the way of life in the owner's era. Beautiful gardens and reasonably priced restaurant with great ambience.
  • I had heard about the "castle" so I took the family for a drive to see it. I knew it was expensive so I wanted to see what we would be spending our money on. I was stopped at the gate and told I could go no further without paying. I wasn't about to fork out my hard earned money without at least a glimpse of what I would be seeing. Do they have set tour times? Do you pay at the gate then do what you want? Do you need to book online since you can drive in without paying? The man on the gate didn't want to help me in any way and told me to turn around and drive out. The more I think about it, the odder the situation was. I now have no desire to take my family there the next time I'm in Dunedin.
  • We visited and stayed in this restored 1870s medieval castle overlooking the Otaga Harbor. Our refurbished room had a panoramic view with sunrise & sunsets from our balcony. Also had a private 3-course supper that was outstanding. Highly recommended.
  • Beautiful gardens. View from the top is great. Top floor is a little unstable for my liking. Interesting history and well worth the drive.
  • Great place to visit any time of the year. Really cool castle all restored and massive grounds. Have fun telling your kids it's haunted and watch them sneak about waiting for something to scare them 👍

Where to stay in Dunedin

Many of the accommodations in Dunedin are based around the central George Street thoroughfare, including a wide range of hotels and hostels. Rental apartments represent a fine way to stay in Dunedin, and may appeal more to those wanting to stay on the move or take in the town and the surrounding landscape at their own pace. Campsites situated to the north and east of the town center give you more economical options, while motels cluster along the main highways, convenient if you're coming by car.
