Larnach Castle & Gardens, Dunedin

(4.1/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
Take in the 19th-century opulence and gorgeous gardens at Larnach Castle & Gardens, one of the largest mansions in New Zealand. Built in 1871 by politician and businessman William Larnach, the massive building has been gradually restored to its original splendor. Today, visitors can walk around the mansion to learn tales of scandalous history and to see sweeping views from the towers. The castle's sprawling grounds, named one of five Gardens of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, include native and exotic plants and a number of specialized gardens, such as the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, and the Alice Lawn. • We visited this Castle on the day of a heavy mist making it even more authentic. A great guided tour ( thanks Di) which brought to life the history of the building and the family residing. Definitely ...  more »
  • I kind of got dragged along on this visit. When I looked into where the other people wanted to go I thought it "isn't even a real castle". I'm totally glad I went now. The gardens are fabulous (just c...  more »

  • Well is not a castle. Its a historic manner house at best. With a reasonable restoration after it fell into disrepair. If you have done castles in Europe avoid this disappointing excuse to cash in on a tourist dollar. Some of the grounds are lovely. Good views of the growing industrial buildings around the bay. I don't know much about flowers and gardens but i am guessing it appeals some. Admission is very expensive for very little.
  • The castle itself is interesting, the cafe has a great selection, and the gardens are beautiful, despite visiting in early spring. The only issue for me is the price. We got a deal through GrabOne and I am glad that we did. The price of admission is far too high to wander around an old mansion and pretty gardens.
  • Absolutely beautiful castle with elaborate woodwork, especially the staircase. Each room has a different style. Very unique for this country to have a castle like this. Building materials from all parts of the world were used in constructing this castle.
  • Incredible, Grand. Great history. Extravagant design and architecture. All that beautiful wood and stone carving. We stayed in the lodge, had the banquet and breakfast. The service was exquisite, the food was good. We appreciated fast free Internet. The big negative was the fog rolled back in and made it hard to take outdoor photos. It also ruined the tower view ( for which William Larnach chose this location). Wish we were told more about the fog, like what times of year to expect it. We visited October 1st and apparently it had been foggy most of the previous week.
  • Such a beautiful, well looked after and peaceful place to spend the afternoon. Just went through the gardens and the views were terrific. The ticket operator kind of spoiled it though. I think I'm pretty proficient with my English, to the point where people can understand me. I asked for 4 garden-only passes, 1 paying separately and 3 paying together. Should have been easy enough, but took a good 5 minutes to get it right, all the while telling me I need to be quicker as I need to "keep this place moving." Really now? That sounds more like your job than mine. Terrible customer service (I work in CS) from this gentleman and as the only person to have met on the trip, 4 stars.
