Larnach Castle & Gardens, Dunedin

Take in the 19th-century opulence and gorgeous gardens at Larnach Castle & Gardens, one of the largest mansions in New Zealand. Built in 1871 by politician and businessman William Larnach, the massive building has been gradually restored to its original splendor. Today, visitors can walk around the mansion to learn tales of scandalous history and to see sweeping views from the towers. The castle's sprawling grounds, named one of five Gardens of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, include native and exotic plants and a number of specialized gardens, such as the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, and the Alice Lawn. Enchanting. The Gardeners have been working hard. The Ballroom was a treat. Make time to enjoy their menu. Worth the visit.

My partner and I both stayed in the lodge and dined in the castle, and dining in a castle is a must do for any traveller, Andy our waiter for the evening was a fountain of information regarding the larnach family, and has some good sense of humour to boot. Thank you to the baker family for what you've done in restoring the castle and preserving it historic value.

Had a great time here, it's a beautiful building with an equally amazing story and history. Didn't get the opportunity to stay here overnight which seems to come with a proper guided tour, but spent 3-4 hours here still taking it all in and following the map from room to room.

Visited on a murky day which didnt really alter the experience. We knew it wasnt cheap, but were surprised to be required to pay at the gate beore even getting a glimpse which isnt a usual tourist experience. It was a self guided tour with map, but the history and story was not well explained and interactive like it was with Olveston yesterday. Basically, too dear for what's on offer which inside, is very little.

Where to stay in Dunedin

Many of the accommodations in Dunedin are based around the central George Street thoroughfare, including a wide range of hotels and hostels. Rental apartments represent a fine way to stay in Dunedin, and may appeal more to those wanting to stay on the move or take in the town and the surrounding landscape at their own pace.
