Dunedin Railway Station, Dunedin

(4.5/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
Stop at Dunedin Railway Station to witness one of the most striking architectural sites in New Zealand, which displays a mix of styles from Edwardian Baroque to Classical and Neo-Gothic. Make sure to bring your camera when you visit this photogenic attraction, with its dark and white stone exterior and intricate interior featuring a floor covered in nearly 750,000 tiles. A number of sightseeing trains leave from the station, and you can kick back and relax as a vintage train brings you through classic New Zealand scenery, such as the seaside or breathtaking gorges. Tip: if you're visiting on Saturday, a farmer's market in front of the station lets you sample and purchase local produce. • But not essential. If you go away that's fine. On the other hand it must be nice to take the train :)

  • Amazing views but was a very long trip. We went for four hours and that was more than enough. Once you have gone one way you can't wait to get back. There was only so many photos of the scenery you could take. Not a bad price for 2 $125.00 for us both.
  • Even if you're not catching the train, hit this place up for the amazing architecture, interior tiling and decoration and the very neat flower gardens out front. Must-see stop if you're doing your own walking tour of Dunedin.
  • The railway station is very beautiful. The train rides are quite expensive and I would not necessarily say they are worth the money but still enjoyable.
  • Beautiful train station. You can still book trips here. There's an old restored steam train on display next to the train station. The upper floor features exhibits.
  • During our recent visit we took the Gorge train and it was a great experience going through the mountains. This is a must try if you visit Dunedin.
