Dunedin Chinese Garden, Dunedin

#7 of 23 in Parks in Dunedin
Escape the bustle of the city at the tranquil Dunedin Chinese Garden, designed in the style of late Ming/early Qing gardens. Sheltered by 4 m (14 ft) walls, wander the paths from courtyard to courtyard, among immaculately landscaped vegetation that changes with the turning of the seasons. In addition to a large lake, the garden features a traditional tea house, serving Chinese teas, steamed buns, and dumplings. Puzzles and games offer mental diversion, while an audio guide explains the history of the Chinese in Dunedin. • We thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting the gardens. It gave us a great understanding of how these types of gardens and pavilions fit within Chinese culture. We also visited the tea rooms and had a yu...  more »
  • In the hub of the city lie these chinese gardens for some peace and quiet. Disappointing to see it could have done with a bit of a tidy up and the water was murky.  more »
  • Amazing that this place is right in the city and you wouldn’t even know what’s behind those walls. It’s absolutely beautiful. I loved the tea house and the dumplings were amazing and the steamed buns,...  more »

  • It is a very beautiful garden. All that small details. I liked it. Free Audio guide. But the garden is very small. You have to pay a few dollars to get in there. But it is not that much.
  • Stepping into the Chinese garden makes you almost forget that you're in the middle of a city. Truly authentic experience, and very tranquil. It's a good place to sit down, catch up on some light reading, and simply relax. There's tea for sale, and a lot of historical information for those who are interested.
  • Very realistic Chinese garden. We visited at the wrong time of the year but in spring when the blossom is out it'd be fabulous. Well worth a visit.
  • A very magical place. We had Green Tea on the Tea house and placed Chinese Checkers too lots of fun.
  • Very beautiful and peaceful. Student rate makes it very reasonable.

Where to stay in Dunedin

Many of the accommodations in Dunedin are based around the central George Street thoroughfare, including a wide range of hotels and hostels. Rental apartments represent a fine way to stay in Dunedin, and may appeal more to those wanting to stay on the move or take in the town and the surrounding landscape at their own pace. Campsites situated to the north and east of the town center give you more economical options, while motels cluster along the main highways, convenient if you're coming by car.
