Dunedin Chinese Garden, Dunedin

#7 of 23 in Parks in Dunedin
Escape the bustle of the city at the tranquil Dunedin Chinese Garden, designed in the style of late Ming/early Qing gardens. Sheltered by 4 m (14 ft) walls, wander the paths from courtyard to courtyard, among immaculately landscaped vegetation that changes with the turning of the seasons. In addition to a large lake, the garden features a traditional tea house, serving Chinese teas, steamed buns, and dumplings. Puzzles and games offer mental diversion, while an audio guide explains the history of the Chinese in Dunedin. • This is a beautiful garden. Although many people are content to have simply visited it once, it makes a great place to come back to. Its beauty is quite unexpected given its placement in town. Make use of the informative audio tour, or simply take your time; it's definitely worth a visit.
  • Plenty of parking options. Close to city centre and next to the beautiful Dunedin train station and garden. Overall a nice place to visit (or better say photo shoot). You will be surprised once you get in 😉 Free entry on Chinese New year (that's why the place is so crowded in the pictures). The place could be perfect for wedding photography.
  • $8 entry. A lot of effort went into creating this garden, and the rock garden part of it is quite special. There is a section on the early Chinese and how they were treated and faired with the early settlers. It probably connects better with the Chinese people of Dunedin, but a little lost on me. For those with limited time, I think there are some better things to spend time on.
  • The place has been nicely made, bearing the usual Oriental look and integrating Chinese art and culture well into the city. It may not be as polished as most gardens, nor as big, but it houses a pond with lotuses growing, wooden partitions with carved features, a small pump driven waterfall, and several bridges over the pond. A nice and serene environment except for the New Year's programme as many flock in to participate in the festivities.
  • Beautiful and peaceful garden with a nicely done exhibit about the history of the Chinese settlers to NZ. The audio tour is free with entry and is very informative. Plus there's a lovely little tea house at the end. Highly recommend.
