Explore New Zealand's naval history since the Flagstaff war of 1845 at Torpedo Bay Navy Museum, the official museum of New Zealand's navy. Having undergone a 1.5 million dollar refurbishment in 2010, the museum contains captivating displays on the Korean War, World War II, and the New Zealand-funded British battle cruiser, HMS New Zealand (look for the Maori warrior skirt given to the ship's commanding officer when it reached the country's shores in 1913). Children get the chance to dress in naval uniform and to consider the lives of servicemen and women at sea in interactive, immersive exhibits. • I did the 30 minute waterfront walk from Devonport ferry terminal to find this excellent free museum showing the history of the NZ Navy. Not a place I would normally seek out but very interesting with...  more »
  • Superb free Museum, with many interactions. Our 3 and 5 year old loved it! It is 20 minutes walk from the centre of Devenport, along the sea!

  • Road from the ferry terminal in Devonport, in the nose had to walk right by the sea and 15 minutes to arrive about 20 minutes. While watching the sea can walk comfortably. Exhibits include photos of the New Zealand Navy. Café located in the same area were crowded with families.

  • As a collector of WW2 artifacts getting to see this museum was very much a treat. Displays are well presented & described. Exhibits are in good condition & span a huge range of time. I recommend getting in early as the parking is tight & fills up quick. Take your time & enjoy the exhibits & check out the gift shop for some interesting & affordable souvenirs.
  • The museum was interesting however ifound it hard to follow the map provided and the area was quite small with a lot of stuff crammed in, it was nice to walk around especially since it is a free museum. There was a lot of the same/similar stuff which became a bit repetitive but they had model ships which were interesting. The gun collection and larger items were the most interesting and the interactive items which there could be more of. Overall worth a quick visit, avid navy fans could spend hours here!
  • One of the best free visit sites in Devonport. Nice café with terrific view of Auckland Harbour. Recommended for families. An easy walk from the Ferry building at Devonport.
  • Lovely cafe. Nice sitting outside watching the world go by. Nice fresh food and came out in no time. Was very busy the time that we were there at 1pm
  • The exhibits document some really important New Zealand history. A great Museum, plenty to see, lovely cafe and playground as well. Makes a really interesting day out for all.
