Explore New Zealand's naval history since the Flagstaff war of 1845 at Torpedo Bay Navy Museum, the official museum of New Zealand's navy. Having undergone a 1.5 million dollar refurbishment in 2010, the museum contains captivating displays on the Korean War, World War II, and the New Zealand-funded British battle cruiser, HMS New Zealand (look for the Maori warrior skirt given to the ship's commanding officer when it reached the country's shores in 1913). Children get the chance to dress in naval uniform and to consider the lives of servicemen and women at sea in interactive, immersive exhibits. • This may be a small museum - but it has a good range of exhibits and information. There is also The Boat Shed with a small collection of little wooden boats. Oh, and the cafe is pretty good too.

  • Awesome displays and a sense of time and place as you walk through. Did not expect it to be so fascinating. Finished off with a wonderful lunch in the cafe. Seriously good food and coffee. Highly recommend this museum A+++
  • This is really a very "under the radar" Museum but is an absolute must to visit. Car parking is free, entry is free, but a small $5 donation is welcome. I especially liked the signage when you enter that states you are on Defence Force property - it makes you appreciate the experience so much more. This Museum is part of our Navy and it really feels like a privilege to be invited in. I only have one suggestion, you seriously need to see if you can create a maritime link with the NZ Maritime Museum, being able to take a vessel from your Museum to theirs (and vise versa) would be an amazing experience!
  • The Museum is great we have a lot to be very proud about our Navy. I cant believe that is free if you have not been there I can highly recommend it. The food at the cafe is also very good. I will definitely be back.
  • Enjoyed being at the Navy Museum today to commemorate 'The Queen's Platinum Jubilee! Enjoyed watching and listening to the Navy Pipes and Drums and the Highland Dancers! Great setting!
  • A must visit if your in the area. Fantastic exhibition, and it's free!! Gold coin donation happily received but not mandatory.
