Mount Victoria Reserve, Devonport

Must see · Park · Nature / Park
Head up to Mount Victoria Reserve for panoramic views of the Auckland skyline across Waitemata Harbour. Aside from the scenery, the park features a field of "painted mushrooms" that serve as decorative vents for an underground water pumping station. You can reach the reserve via a 10-20 minute uphill walk or by driving, biking, or riding a Segway. Parking at the top is limited. On your way up, stop in at the historical Signalman’s House, which used to inform locals of ship departures and arrivals. The access road also features numerous shops and cafes. Bring a jacket because it's often blustery at the top. Use Inspirock's suggestions to plan your Devonport trip and find the best activities and attractions for your vacation.

  • Love this place, one of the classic spots I use to visit when I was growing up, so neat to be there again, just a shame you can't drive to the top.  more »
  • As part of the Devonport Explorer bus, we stopped here to take in the views and photos. The driver explained the history of the site. It can also be accessed via foot from the ferry port.  more »
  • Found it a pleasant and not too taxing walk to the top to show fabulous views of our city to American friends. Well worth it.  more »
  • Beautiful view of the city and the surrounding islands. Access by cars if people don't fancy climbing the hill by foot. It doesn't take too long to climb by foot though. No toilets or water station (or I didn't See!) so better be organise before going up the volcano. Also there are vestiges of the past - canon and stones statue. The view is worth the effort!
  • It is a nice 10-15 minute walk up a fairly steep hillside or if you are driving there is a small parking area. At the summit you are rewarded with sweeping views of Auckland Harbor and skyline on one side and volcanoes across the bay on the other. The famously engineered "disappearing gun" is located here.
  • Takarunga is one of my favourite Volcanoes in Auckland. With 360 views of the Hauraki Gulf and city skyline, it offers a view of Auckland that is unique in its position. This is a place I'd always go to when visitors come and I'd like to show them how beautiful this city is. Now that you need to walk up the summit, which is a fantastic idea in preserving the site, there are plenty of little tracks around to show you different views with a unique experience.
  • Great view of Auckland city. The walk from the ferry dock to the top of the mountain was actually tiring lol. Great for people with good stamina and endurance
  • My favorite place to go. Recently they shut the access to cars (unless you are disabled) ... but access by walking, cycling, or motorbiking is still available. Best view of auckland. Highly recommended
