Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Christchurch

4.5
#1 of 18 in Wildlife in Christchurch
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve provides a glimpse into New Zealand's natural heritage and addresses the issues that threaten its future. The reserve's 50-plus animals are grouped into three categories that track the development of the country's ecosystem: Wild New Zealand features animals introduced in the early days of the country; Heritage New Zealand houses domesticated creatures that have shaped the nation's farming industry; and Natural New Zealand supports the iconic and rare species that make up its special ecological community. Kiwis, kea, gibbons, wallabies, and more can all be found at the reserve. Purchase some food bags to feed the critters before chowing down yourself at the onsite restaurant. • Enjoyed walking through this reserve, It has a good number of exhibits so it's worth the entry fee. Managed to see the Kiwi Bird although it was dark in the enclosure. Lots of pretty birds.  more »
  • Cute place. Lots to see. Many many birds. Three distinct areas to walk round. Probably not a rainy day venue.worth buying bird and animal food. Cites llama ever lives here.  more »
  • A family-sized zoo (can be easily done in 2 hours) with familiar animals and New Zealand epidemic ones. Our children (6 and 3 years old) loved it, especially the Kiwis (in the dark however).  more »

  • A lot for children and adults to see. From seeing birds including our iconic flightless birds and lizards to feeding eel and farm animals. Also has a great picnic area! We like to take our own picnic but there is a dairy on site as well and also pony rides are pretty cheap. Makes for a good couple of hours of entertainment.
  • So a lot of the best Zoos are free. This one was not, but it was amazing. Never been to place where your can get so up and close to the animals, including kiwi birds. And the animals almost had no fear of people. Really cool experience. My kids loved it.
  • We love spending time at Willowbank. Fantastic place for family fun. The kids love learning about all the different animals, watching how they eat and what they eat, how they move, where they like to live. If you are local a family pass is well worth it!
  • Never get tired of this place. Fantastic cafe area. Rain or shine this is the best place to take your wee ones. Highly recommend
  • It felt a bit like the way you walk through the Ikea. You had to follow the path. What I like in other parks is that they offer walks away from the masses. That was missing here.

Where to stay in Christchurch

Offering an extensive range of hotels, hostels, motels with kitchens, and campsites, Christchurch makes a great place to set up camp as you explore the city and beyond. The greatest diversity of accommodations clusters in the city center next to North and South Hagley parks. You'll find apartments, boutique and luxury hotels, and backpacker hostels in the central district and towards the coast, while cheaper places to stay--such as motels, RV parks, and economy hotels--dot the outskirts and the area surrounding the airport.
