Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Christchurch

(4.5/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve provides a glimpse into New Zealand's natural heritage and addresses the issues that threaten its future. The reserve's 50-plus animals are grouped into three categories that track the development of the country's ecosystem: Wild New Zealand features animals introduced in the early days of the country; Heritage New Zealand houses domesticated creatures that have shaped the nation's farming industry; and Natural New Zealand supports the iconic and rare species that make up its special ecological community. Kiwis, kea, gibbons, wallabies, and more can all be found at the reserve. Purchase some food bags to feed the critters before chowing down yourself at the onsite restaurant. Our Christchurch trip itinerary builder makes visiting Willowbank Wildlife Reserve and other Christchurch attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • We visited the Park because my wife loves animals of all. The Park is beautifully designed and guides the visitor through the various regions with a wide variety of animals. The partially elaborately designed and decorated areas make a good impression. The special highlight of the Park is the Kiwi House without asking. Here, the visitor can admire the Kiwis in a relatively large-scale interior area after a short period of eye adaptation in almost total darkness. A downside of the system is actually the attitude of some species and species to narrow enclosures and unnatural habitats. We should not forget that there are always not animals, need plenty of space and outlet usually come like we also observe animals and close them. For those who want to see animals in a more natural environment, we can recommend the alpaca place north of Wellington.

  • Not at all an animal reserve. It's a zoo. Screaming unsupervised children, yelling & banging on enclosures, stressed animals & some displaying agression, trapped in small cages, zero enrichment, dirty algea infested waters. Very disappointed.
  • Wonderful experience, if you are ever in South Island, its a must do. The Willowbank Wildlife Reserve has an array of animals, great fun for children and adults. Be sure to join Ko Tane: The Maori experience to greater understand the culture and join in with dances. Highly recommended!
  • Great place to take the kids. Lots of different types of animals. Lot of open enclosures so you can get up and touch the animals. Can buy food to feed the animals. Nice place to sit and eat food.
  • A fantastic resource in easy reach of most ChCh suburbs. Amazing staff, great exhibits and enclosures, really educational and good way to occupy kids for an hour or three.
  • Had a great time here. The birds, pigs and other animals are wonderful and a great place to bring kids. The eels were even fascinating. I also enjoyed the Maori experience which walks you through a village and you can interact with the actors who take you through certain rituals.
