Where to stay in Christchurch

Offering an extensive range of hotels, hostels, motels with kitchens, and campsites, Christchurch makes a great place to set up camp as you explore the city and beyond. The greatest diversity of accommodations clusters in the city center next to North and South Hagley parks. You'll find apartments, boutique and luxury hotels, and backpacker hostels in the central district and towards the coast, while cheaper places to stay--such as motels, RV parks, and economy hotels--dot the outskirts and the area surrounding the airport.

  • Had read about the museum in tourist brouchers but didn't expect it to be such a treasure. From colonial cottages and fittings to priceless Maori artefacts the collection is extensive and engaging.  more »
  • The staff here certainly went the extra mile with their explanations. They even made us a (free!)cup of tea. An interesting experience for me was to feel a minor earth tremor during our visit.  more »

  • Wow! What a surprise! Having visited numerous museums during our visits to NZ, we have seen some impressive displays. What a comprehensive collection of Maori and colonial artefacts! Would love to see the NZ Government give some funding so that these wonderful items could be preserved and displayed to their full advantage. Concerned to see very old magazines etc out in the elements. If you don't mind a bit of a hairy drive, it is worth seeing. Robyn Tank - Ipswich, Australia.
  • I visited this wonderful museum with 3 other friends in late January 2017. The displays of the many artifacts were quite amazing bringing our early history to life. The waaka on display in the special shelter were of the highest design and so well maintained. I have nothing but praise and admiration for this group who have brought together so much of our past and who care for it with so much love and passion. Living in Tauranga where we have no museum but many relics locked away in an Archives building where they cannot be seen puts my city to shame. Well done to all those who maintain this excellent museum at Okains Bay.
  • It's obvious the museum doesn't have much money to be managed in a proper way, which is a shame because it gives a lot of information and artefacts of Maori lives. Quite interesting for a short stopover if you are in Okains Bay.
  • Great little museum. Amazing collection of local Maori artefacts.
  • Waitangi Day hosted by the Museum was quite good.
