Banks Peninsula, Christchurch

(4.8/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
Explore the picturesque Banks Peninsula and its rich plant and animal life via a plethora of well-maintained walking, driving, and cycling routes. Jutting out from South Island's east coast, this conglomeration of bays and coves was formed by volcanic eruptions many millions of years ago. Extend your visit by craft-shopping in small villages that dot its hills. The seaside town of Akaroa, once a French settlement, is particularly popular and has retained a distinctly European feel. If you're lucky, you may spot some of Hector's dolphins cresting the nearby waters: found only in New Zealand, this is the smallest and one of the rarest dolphin species. • It is an hour 20 out of Christchurch, but well worth the visit. The tourist scenic drive is spectacular, just by itself. The town is pretty, with plenty of parking. We took a harbour cruise with Akaro...  more »
  • Banks Peninsula is a great opportunity to get away from the bustle of Christchurch. Through narrow winding streets, beautiful coves can be reached. You can see today the influence of French settlers who settled in the town of Akaroa. Particularly impressive is also the journey over the narrow and curvy but also for larger camper Mobile Summit Road, which offers great views.
