Banks Peninsula, Christchurch

Inspirock Rating:
4.8/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web
Explore the picturesque Banks Peninsula and its rich plant and animal life via a plethora of well-maintained walking, driving, and cycling routes. Jutting out from South Island's east coast, this conglomeration of bays and coves was formed by volcanic eruptions many millions of years ago. Extend your visit by craft-shopping in small villages that dot its hills. The seaside town of Akaroa, once a French settlement, is particularly popular and has retained a distinctly European feel. If you're lucky, you may spot some of Hector's dolphins cresting the nearby waters: found only in New Zealand, this is the smallest and one of the rarest dolphin species.
