Otago Central Rail Trail, Central Otago

(4.9/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Walk, cycle, or ride horseback along Otago Central Rail Trail to discover the spectacular landscape of the Otago region. This 150 km (93.2 mi) route runs between Middlemarch and Clyde, where the Otaga Central Railway used to operate. You'll pass vast countryside, mountains, and numerous attractions along the way, including the historical Old Dunstan Road, which was used by gold miners in the 1800s. Towns in the area are well equipped with restaurants and accommodations, but it's a good idea to bring plenty of food and water. Pubs serve as a particularly cozy rest spot after a long day on the trail--giving the route its affectionate nickname, the "Ale Trail."
