Whakaari White Island Volcano, Bay of Plenty Region

Must see · Wildlife Area · Nature / Park
Possibly the most accessible live volcano in the world, Whakaari White Island Volcano was so named by Captain Cook because it always appeared to be in a cloud of white steam. Reach the crater by luxury motor boat or helicopter, and then explore the shifting, alien landscape on foot. With its ferocious steam vents, bubbling mud pits, hot volcanic streams, and lake of steaming acid, it's clear why the Maori call the island "Te Puia o Whakaari," or the Dramatic Volcano. If that's a little too adventurous for you, take to the skies in a seaplane for an aerial tour of the island and surrounding bay. The waters here are well known for their fishing, including yellowtail kingfish, marlin, and yellowfin tuna. Remember, the island is a protected reserve, so leave nothing but your footprints! • Awesome place to visit with a tour! The island is very unique. On the way back we saw dolphins chasing the boat.
  • It will be Long Trip to get there if you take a boat (and return) so it’s Pretty full on day but very enjoyable and worthwhile to be on an active Volcano. High chance of seeing dolphins or other ocean mammals. Tour guides that take you there are generally very knowledgeable (of course would depend on who takes you). Take all safety procurations that are given to you, I did need the mask at times as the fumes can be quite overpowering. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone, tourist or Kiwi. It is something you need to see (if you have money take a helicopter to make your day shorter).
  • An amazing experience. The whole trip was very good, lovely and knowledgeable guides, the island itself was awesome, lunch back on the boat was nice and to round it all off we saw Bryde's whales feeding.
  • It's a surreal experience to walk on a live volcano with sulphuric fumes and steam billowing from many cracks in the surface. If you inhale the fumes you experience a sharp sting in your airways. The water at the bottom of the lake is so acidic it has a negative pH. It's unbelievable that humans attempted to mine the sulphur for commercial purposes. Some poor souls died in the attempt. Remnants of the ill fated mining attempt are now rusting away, the acid rain slowly eating away the steel and wood.
  • wanna go back ,great fishing aboard persuit
