Nugget Point/Tokata Walks, Balclutha

(4.9/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Take in the sweeping views and abundant wildlife at Nugget Point/Tokata Walks, an iconic landmark on the Catlins coastline. Enjoy the easy walk out to the stout lighthouse, built in 1869 to protect ships from the rocky islets--or nuggets--which give the promontory its name. Take a short walk out to neighboring Roaring Bay to visit the bird blind, from which you can watch for penguins, gannets, and spoonbills. Fur seals frequent the waters around the point, as do sea lions and elephant seals, and if you're lucky you might catch sight of a passing dolphin, orca, or humpback whale. • We stayed the night in good weather, magnificent view! On the way out we saw a "stop" to see 500 m below of the "yellow-eyed penguins" (the Penguin the + rare in the world). In March: Go before 07:00 or after 16:00 (depending on the Panel). We were lucky to see one around 19:00.

  • A bit of a drive to the car park and a walk after that but well worth it. Be sure to do it if you are in the area.  more »
