Nugget Point/Tokata Walks, Balclutha

(220+ reviews on the web)
Lighthouse
Take in the sweeping views and abundant wildlife at Nugget Point/Tokata Walks, an iconic landmark on the Catlins coastline. Enjoy the easy walk out to the stout lighthouse, built in 1869 to protect ships from the rocky islets--or nuggets--which give the promontory its name. Take a short walk out to neighboring Roaring Bay to visit the bird blind, from which you can watch for penguins, gannets, and spoonbills. Fur seals frequent the waters around the point, as do sea lions and elephant seals, and if you're lucky you might catch sight of a passing dolphin, orca, or humpback whale.
