Nugget Point/Tokata Walks, Balclutha

4.9
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Balclutha
Take in the sweeping views and abundant wildlife at Nugget Point/Tokata Walks, an iconic landmark on the Catlins coastline. Enjoy the easy walk out to the stout lighthouse, built in 1869 to protect ships from the rocky islets--or nuggets--which give the promontory its name. Take a short walk out to neighboring Roaring Bay to visit the bird blind, from which you can watch for penguins, gannets, and spoonbills. Fur seals frequent the waters around the point, as do sea lions and elephant seals, and if you're lucky you might catch sight of a passing dolphin, orca, or humpback whale. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Balclutha holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Nugget Point/Tokata Walks and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We have not succeeded in unfortunately due to time constraints to the lighthouse, but only up to the car park (approx. 800m walk). The road was restored by Kaka Point here and we were a long time on the 'stop'-signs. But what we can say is, that it is at "normal" directions absolutely worthwhile. Great scenery. The view North is awesome. Also, the Bay and the beaches on the nuggets road Esplanade are great. Yet a smaller parking lot of you down can run the Roaring Bay to the observation hut, to observe penguins is located 500 meters from the parking lot. Worth but only at certain times. (Photo attached) The directions of the Catlins southern scenic route is relatively easy. Behind Owaka in a small collection of houses called Ahuriri flat to the right (RI. Nugget point/k point). After 8 km, it is on the coast, where you should turn right to the nugget point. The parking lot is 7 km away. Back you can continue straight ahead through the pretty village of Kaka Point direction Balclutha.

  • It was a bit rainy and windy. That just added to the enjoyment. Make the effort to do the 2klms round trip walk to the lighthouse. Spectacular.  more »
