Waitakere Ranges, Auckland
(4.9/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
One of the nation's greatest natural treasures, Waitakere Ranges encompass more than 16,000 hectares (39,537 acres) of native forest and sweeping coastline. The diverse and rich landscape offers a wide choice of activities, from bird-watching to surfing off one its famous black-sand beaches. It's easy to explore this breathtaking region: simply set off on a portion of its 250 km (155 mi) of walking and hiking trails, or cruise the aptly named Scenic Drive. If you decide to go swimming off the coast, be aware of dangerous riptides and large swells. An information center with brochures and detailed walking maps can be found near the Titirangi end of the ranges. Take a look at our Auckland tourist route planner to schedule your visit to Waitakere Ranges and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.
