Rangitoto Island, Auckland

4.7
#4 of 11 in Nature in Auckland
Volcano · Island
The youngest island in the Auckland volcanic field at just 700 years old, Rangitoto Island makes a prime spot for an island hike. The moderately challenging trek up the 260 m (850 ft) volcano rewards you with fantastic views of the blue water, Aukland, and other islands nearby. The plant life on the island is impressive: over 200 species of trees, plants, and flowers call the island home, including several varieties of orchids and ferns. Its special geography as a young volcanic island means that you get to see many stages of its development, including raw lava fields and scrub. • Beautiful scenery . Lovely to visit at sunset for an anniversary . 💍
  • Great days outing lots of birds good boat ride
  • No too tourisie.
  • Beautiful place to visit, the views are amazing.
  • Unique volcanic island in Auckland. You can take the ferry from the terminal in downtown to the island and then it is a 2km walk to the summit, which at 260 metres above sea level, gives you the second best view of Auckland (first is the Sky Tower). From there, you can walk down the other side of the mountain and around the island, or have a look at the lava caves near the summit.
