Rangitoto Island, Auckland

4.7
#4 of 13 in Nature in Auckland
The youngest island in the Auckland volcanic field at just 700 years old, Rangitoto Island makes a prime spot for an island hike. The moderately challenging trek up the 260 m (850 ft) volcano rewards you with fantastic views of the blue water, Aukland, and other islands nearby. The plant life on the island is impressive: over 200 species of trees, plants, and flowers call the island home, including several varieties of orchids and ferns. Its special geography as a young volcanic island means that you get to see many stages of its development, including raw lava fields and scrub. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Rangitoto Island and many more Auckland attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Auckland trip planner.

  • The island is a perfect scenic trekking spot, although the boat timings kind of worry you as you wouldn't want to get stranded there. Lots of fun treks, and hiring a Bach can make the experience much more great as you can trek all the way to the beautiful bays in the island. Would not recommend for someone with poor fitness as the treks are moderate to high difficulty levels. Otherwise a perfect getaway!!
  • Great place for adventure. Use suitable footwear and take plenty of water with you!
  • Great place to go for a hike or walk. Not too exhausting and fantastic views!
  • Took our one year old up the walking track. Hard work carrying the baby, but well worth it at the top. Ferry crossing was smooth and the coffee at the on board cafe was good, which was a pleasant surprise.
  • It’s only a short ferry ride from the pier and cost about 35 nzd for round trip boat ride. You have to brush off any dirt and check bags for things that might contaminate the island since there is a problem with rodents eating bird eggs. There is no food shop so bring water and snacks before you go. There is a bach (batch) that is open to visitors for you to see how locals used to live while on their little vacations on the island. There is volcanic flows all the down to the water from the eruptions 600 years ago. Good views from the top.
