Manukau Heads Lighthouse, Auckland

(4.5/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Take in the spectacular views of Manukau Harbor from Manukau Heads Lighthouse, dating back to 1874. Lighthouses are typically difficult to reach in New Zealand, but visitors can park near this attraction and take a short set of stairs to the site. The wooden lighthouse was rebuilt in 2006 using pieces from the original structure. Bring your camera for amazing photo ops, and be sure to search the waters directly below, where the rare Maui's dolphin takes refuge. Consider leaving a donation to the lighthouse for maintenance fees. For Manukau Heads Lighthouse and beyond, use our Auckland trip generator to get the most from your Auckland vacation.

  • It is an old lighthouse with a nice view. Very popular, it was full of tourists. It is a bit remote but still worth the driving. You could spend the whole day if you include Awhitu Regional Park, abou...  more »
  • A cute little lighthouse, the view is beautiful, and you're not surrounded by tourists. The only problem: it's far. The road is long and does no loop, so go after Manukau heads and then return by the same route. But there are other nice corner between Auckland and the lighthouse where to stop along the way, do everything together on a day (with a swimsuit for bathing in some stunts) If you live in Auckland and you make the road, it's the opportunity to buy on the way of the eggs free range for a good price.

  • Its a long way from anywhere so go when the weather is calm and sunny so you can perhaps stop and have a picnic. The heads are grass covered sand dunes created 20 million years ago.  more »

  • Remotely located, calm and beautiful. Breathtaking view, fresh air. Totally loved the view and beauty of the place. Unfortunately the place closes at 5 pm that is the only draw back otherwise it is a great place to go with friends and family.
  • An awesome place. Only an hour and a half drive from Auckland city. This is a must do on any traveler's list. The highlight is the scenery and the fact that one can enter inside the lighthouse to observe the surroundings. Very well maintained given the fact it is on private land. A must see.
  • So glad I made the trip out here, well worth it. An enterprising lady was selling dumplings at the bottom of the hill, made my day.
  • Long drive to get there but great views. You can even see the Auckland tower from here
  • Nice getaway place. Beautiful scenery. But be aware of the parking. Not a big parking area.
