Trip Planner : South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Auckland Region / Auckland / Nature / Devonport
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Just a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland, the seaside neighborhood of Devonport draws big crowds with its outstanding dining options and unbeatable views of the city's modern skyline. Often compared to California's Sausalito, this area exudes bohemian charm and offers plenty of little shops selling rare books and tourist trinkets. The best way to experience the vibrant quarter is to walk down its main streets, home to a collection of well-maintained Victorian villas and the first purpose-built movie theater in the Southern Hemisphere. Use the area as your base for sightseeing and day trips to nearby Mount Victoria, an 87 m (285 ft) volcano of undetermined age.
