Butterfly Creek, Auckland
Categories: Wildlife Areas, Nature & Parks
Colorful butterflies and saltwater crocodiles come together at Butterfly Creek, a popular tourist attraction located just minutes from Auckland's international airport. This sanctuary contains a huge butterfly house, home to over 700 free-flying butterflies and exotic birds. A huge draw for families with kids, this site includes a playground area and offers train rides around a dinosaur-themed exhibit. After you see prehistoric creatures come to life, head to the interactive farmyard, where you can hold and pet cuddly creatures including rabbits, guinea pigs, alpacas, sheep, and pigs. End your visit at the crocodile enclosure, housing two saltwater crocs originally from Australia. We didn't have high expectations but this place turned out to be our favourite. A good variety of things to do/see/eat all set out and maintained really well. Really impressed.
Place was crowded, dirty and unless you buy the dinosaur kingdom there is nothing to do for the kids. We were done in half and hour including the time we waited for the train ride. Worst park ever!

First time out to Butterfly Creek so didn't quite know what to expect. Three grandchildren aged 9, 8 and 6 really enjoyed the whole experience. . We had to return to the Butterfly enclosure a number o... read more »
Came to Butterfly Creek on Friday with my 4 year old and friends, they had a blast, so much to do and see. The kids really loved the dinosaurs and the train, but their favourite was the farm yard where they got to feed the goats. A great place to bring young kids, I loved watching them explore and have fun. Had lunch in the cafe, the best soup ever!! I would visit just for the pumpkin soup alone. A great day out, highly recommended.
Butterfly Creek is such a great family day out! It has to be one of the most (or the most?!) interactive attractions in Auckland. The kids (aged 2, 5 & 6) loved the Dinosaur Kingdom, but it was my husband who we had to drag out of there. The kids especially loved the farm yard & getting to cuddle the rabbits. The Butterfly House was also a hit. Tip: wear pink! The butterflies were definitely landing more on our pink coat - apparently they are attracted to pink (& yellow & white).
We loved the butterflies and moth section, spent awhile with our faces against the insect tanks and cuddle lots of cute farm animals! The interactive experiences were a let down. Rather than holding a tarantula or interacting they just brought it out in a tupperware container. Also slightly disappointed in the display information, which was either non existent or inaccurate. I'm sure Tarantulas aren't poisonous but I would like to know if they are venomous as I don't intend on ever ingesting one. Overall a good family day out, and something you must check out at some stage. Due to being 21 and 23 we did not explore the dinosaur world as we thought it was probably aimed at a younger audience.
A real hidden treasure, I came not knowing a lot about Butterfly Creek with my 2 year old niece and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I loved watching her little face light up at all the new experiences, and enjoyed my own first experience in the butterfly house - watching the butterflies floating around and landing on lucky unaware visitors was magical. Great photo opportunities all round. The large roaming dinosaur was fantastic! All the kids loved him and he had a line of kids following wherever he went. The food portions were large and delicious. We didn't go into Dinosaur Kingdom - but will definitely go next time. I want to see my niece's reaction to the moving roaring dinosaurs! It's bound to make a good story.
Kids love it here with a good bit of variety between the butterfly house and the newish Dinosaur area. Not a cheap day out though and the butterfly house was feeling a bit empty last time
