Learn about New Zealand's rich history at Auckland War Memorial Museum, serving as both a major cultural institution and a war memorial. Designed in the 1920s as a commanding neoclassical temple, this structure features an impressive copper dome, added in 2007. The ground floor, dedicated to the Auckland area's natural and military history, houses impressive displays of Maori artifacts, including a war canoe and a carved meeting house (which you can enter only after removing your shoes). The upper levels feature more military exhibits and a display about the region's volcanic fields, including a fascinating simulation of an eruption. For the sake of convenience, take a guided highlights tour, included in your admission ticket. Plan a Auckland trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • In my younger years when I lived in Auckland I spent many happy hours at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Sadly this has changed now with the museum charging $50 per person entry ($100 a couple for a...  more »
  • New Zealand contributed to the Allied forces that liberated Europe during WWI and WWII. However interesting, it will not be the main purpose of the visit for most tourists. Two other departments and the Maori Performance are:-An excellent department of Geology, including excellent information about the volcanism and the earthquakes that this country has been facing since its inception. -A wonderful department of Maori Art and culture-a presentation with music and dance in which the history of the Maori people is told. It was a well spent morning!

  • There is a great deal of history here as well as quite a lot about the cultures in the South Pacific. It is a great first stop for visitors to learn more about New Zealand. I would recommend a tour as the amount of reading can be a bit staggering. Some of the exhibits are quite small, but the overall size of the museum is quite large. There's a good deal of construction going on currently, so I'm sure the museum will expand and have even more to offer.
  • I love museums, more so when visiting another country to learn about its history, culture,, geography and natural habitat. The museum didn't disappoint. The Maori Cultural performance was as entertaining as it was captivating. The children's section was fantastic, probably one of the best I've seen anywhere. If I could make one suggestion it would be to maybe add a microphone during the cultural performance as I sometimes found it difficult to hear what was being said. I highly recommend the museum to anyone wanting to learn more about New Zealand
  • An incredible experience! Feels very luxurious and a great historical experience. My dad and I visited here and we are huge nerds so we could have spent days here- it is HUGE. The exhibits are fascinating with great interactive parts. I'd highly recommend visiting the volcano exhibit- very impressive and even has a house where you can experience what it would be like to be in an eruption. I also hear they frequently update and switch exhibits, so new content each time you go. There's something for everyone- a great family activity.
  • Great museum with plenty of bandwidth. From Maori to dinosaurs you can find a lot here. It costs 25 dollars for bin Auckland residents but they usually give you tickets anyways if you pretend to show the lovely lady something on your phone. So don't be discouraged by the price and give it a try.
  • Amazing place to visit. Our 2 and 4 y/o loved it. Free parking. They have a cafe on the ground floor. You can't take a stroller in the museum or a large bag (small handbag size ok) but you can check it into the bag check free of charge. The building is beautiful! Definitely a must see.
