Karekare Beach, Auckland Region

(90+ reviews on the web)
Beach
Wild and unspoiled, Karekare Beach draws locals to its large stretch of black sand despite the hard-to-reach location. In the summer, surf patrols and lifeguards oversee the beach due to the unpredictable nature of the current. The strong waters have claimed many lives, so stick to swimming while lifeguards are on duty and keep between the flags. Also take time to visit Karekare Falls, just a short walk from the beach, or go along the Pohutukawa Glade Walk. • Soft dark sand. Refreshing not too cold sea with good waves to play around in. Wonderful cliffs to walk along. Great day out.  more »

  • A tricky road to navigate when it’s winding and narrow but the spectacular at the end makes it all worth the drive. The surrounding scenery is very dramatic and the beach is mysteriously beautiful-with a large rock perched in pristine water. Wait for the sunset and you will not regret to see the wonderful colours and reflections of it on the sky and water, it’s just stunning. Also, don’t forget to bring food and water as there are no shops in the area.
  • Beautiful beach, phenomenal sunsets over the Tasman Sea. The only negative is that the bathrooms and parking are VERY far from the beach.
  • Wild and isolated, no coverage by Vodafone. I was there at low tide with 1.5 surf running. Robust westerly so plenty of haze from surf and sand. The haze, morning light and jagged clay infused basalt outcrops made for moody and dramatic photos. Well worth the 4km return trip down that steep narrow swtchback road.
  • Love Karekare, called in here Saturday 4 Feb 2017, almost moved here 12 years ago - wish I had, wild, rugged west coast - just awesome and stunning - do some of the walks - I did Taraire Track + Pohutukawa Glade Walk, Mt Zion next time. GO
  • Lovely place to spend at least part of your day. The black sand is unique and exciting for a good five minutes and then you realise it's just a big ol' beach. Great if you like beaches. Sea close, cliffs near, sand dunes adjacent. Watch out for the ducks: they bite toes.
