Karekare Beach, Auckland Region

4.7
#6 of 17 in Beaches in Auckland Region
Wild and unspoiled, Karekare Beach draws locals to its large stretch of black sand despite the hard-to-reach location. In the summer, surf patrols and lifeguards oversee the beach due to the unpredictable nature of the current. The strong waters have claimed many lives, so stick to swimming while lifeguards are on duty and keep between the flags. Also take time to visit Karekare Falls, just a short walk from the beach, or go along the Pohutukawa Glade Walk. The place is quite extraordinary! The coast line is craggy, the jutting rocks and landscape is spectacular, the surf is wild and a walk along the beach is a must. Lots of parking and walking trails up...  more »

This gigantic black beach in Waitakere Ranges Regional Park was the most impressive thing about Auckland and, actually, of the the whole Northern Island. It is less than an hour's drive from Auckland ...  more »

  • A tricky road to navigate when it’s winding and narrow but the spectacular at the end makes it all worth the drive. The surrounding scenery is very dramatic and the beach is mysteriously beautiful-with a large rock perched in pristine water. Wait for the sunset and you will not regret to see the wonderful colours and reflections of it on the sky and water, it’s just stunning. Also, don’t forget to bring food and water as there are no shops in the area.
  • We got to Karekare from Whatipu by walking along the beach through the Whatipu scientific reserve. We were able to walk back to Whatipu through the trails along the cliff. Really nice beach with plenty of walking trails nearby. The carpark has a map so you can see what trails are nearby. Most of the trails are well signposted and the tracks easy to find. Be wary of some of the tracks as they may be muddy so traversing them may require extra effort. Plenty to do here if you like going out and enjoying nature.
  • Beautiful beach, phenomenal sunsets over the Tasman Sea. The only negative is that the bathrooms and parking are VERY far from the beach.
  • Beautiful beach in auckland area. It's really awesome place.
  • Wild and isolated, no coverage by Vodafone. I was there at low tide with 1.5 surf running. Robust westerly so plenty of haze from surf and sand. The haze, morning light and jagged clay infused basalt outcrops made for moody and dramatic photos. Well worth the 4km return trip down that steep narrow swtchback road.
