Karekare Beach, Auckland Region

Categories: Beaches, Nature & Parks, Outdoor Activities
Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web
Wild and unspoiled, Karekare Beach draws locals to its large stretch of black sand despite the hard-to-reach location. In the summer, surf patrols and lifeguards oversee the beach due to the unpredictable nature of the current. The strong waters have claimed many lives, so stick to swimming while lifeguards are on duty and keep between the flags. Also take time to visit Karekare Falls, just a short walk from the beach, or go along the Pohutukawa Glade Walk. • I was lucky enough to enjoy the beach me all by myself! Is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Whereas Auckland as the city doesn't offer much, worth stretch of an hour to stroll on the black sand Karekare.

  • He we was advised to go see this beach where the beginning of the movie "The Piano lesson" was shot. Achieved after crossing the forest rain, easy to park his car and after a few minutes of markets is reached this beautiful beach bordering the Tasman Sea. We find that the sand is warm beneath our feet and it is lined with dark cliffs.

  • Great place for a walk. When the weather is a bit wild it's even better.
  • Bit more relaxed than piha
  • Beautiful black sand beach, nice walks
  • Great location to walk around with some amazing views. We were there when the tide was out so you have this vast open flat black sand beach. Heads up, the road going to it is narrow.... If you are a crappy driver who doesn't know where you are in your lane then this may not be for you.
  • Black sand, gorgeous ocean, small river, beautiful cliffs and drifts.
