Tiritiri Matangi Island, Auckland Central

#1 of 34 in Wildlife in Auckland Central
The wildlife sanctuary of Tiritiri Matangi Island shelters a number of threatened and endangered bird and reptile species, including the tuatara, the only survivor of a distinct order of reptiles that lived at the same time as dinosaurs. Though over a century of farming had stripped this area of its native bush, much of it has been restored thanks to the efforts of volunteers, who planted nearly 300,000 trees here between 1984 and 1994. Today, the site ranks among New Zealand's most important conservation projects. Walk among the native bush and look out for the birds, such as the flightless takahe, wandering freely and flashing their colors. Sit quietly at one of the feeders and watch as the birds gurgle and feed safe from predators, or stay the night and visit the kiwis. Do consider taking a tour with a guide, who can show you things that the inexperienced eye may overlook. The shop near the lighthouse sells books and souvenirs, such as leadlight bird hangings, native wildlife finger puppets, and fridge magnets. • An amazing experience! The walks are really well marked and as soon as you are on the tracks you can see and hear birds... The volunteers are passionate people and they will take care of you for a visit. The shop has some good quality products and for a reasonable price. If you like nature, don't miss it while in Auckland.
  • Well worth a visit, it's a fantastic day out. There's some amazing bird and insect life on the island, and if you're lucky you might spot a kokako! I'd recommend going for the guided tour, the volunteers are very knowledgeable and will give you some great tips for spotting some of the rarer birds. There are plenty of walks that suit differing levels of ability, and these offer the chance to take in a variety of scenery and vistas. There's free tea and coffee at the visitor centre, but nothing else available on the island so make sure to bring your own food and drink.
  • I really like this island, it‘s so beautiful! You can have lunch at the Lighthouse (has toilets, a shop for souvenirs and free tea). And at the end you can swim at the beach near the ferry, that‘s a great ending for your trip. They will control your food which you bring (you can only buy chocolate in the shop, so I would bring my own lunch), you have to fill it in plastic bags (or in containers) so no seeds can come on the island and maybe damage the nature. Your shoes have to be cleaned. There are some guides who show you around and tell you everything about the birds. You can just point on one you see and they will give you much information about it. The trip is definitely worth it & i can only recommend it. But if you want to enjoy it, take your time and do a day trip to the Island!!
  • This place was really surreal! It was just magnificent! You'll see some of the rarest species of birds and some unbelievably beautiful views. Just close your eyes and listen to the birds singing in the forest and absorb the endless energy of the island. Make sure to bring enough food and water since it's an all-day activity and there is no food or water in the island.
  • Great trip experience back in my high school days. Made a trip recently and it was amazing. Interesting bird life and mother nature experience
