Tiritiri Matangi Island, Auckland Central

#1 of 41 in Wildlife in Auckland Central
The wildlife sanctuary of Tiritiri Matangi Island shelters a number of threatened and endangered bird and reptile species, including the tuatara, the only survivor of a distinct order of reptiles that lived at the same time as dinosaurs. Though over a century of farming had stripped this area of its native bush, much of it has been restored thanks to the efforts of volunteers, who planted nearly 300,000 trees here between 1984 and 1994. Today, the site ranks among New Zealand's most important conservation projects. Walk among the native bush and look out for the birds, such as the flightless takahe, wandering freely and flashing their colors. Sit quietly at one of the feeders and watch as the birds gurgle and feed safe from predators, or stay the night and visit the kiwis. Do consider taking a tour with a guide, who can show you things that the inexperienced eye may overlook. The shop near the lighthouse sells books and souvenirs, such as leadlight bird hangings, native wildlife finger puppets, and fridge magnets. • An amazing place. Tour includes guided walks on the island to suit levels of fitness, but still expect uphill tramps. Free coffee, tea in the shop. You must take a packed lunch and wear suitable shoes.
  • What Auckland must have been like before development. A must do for all visitors. Easy walking and prolific bird life. Great beach to relax and cool off. Cafe pretty good too.
  • My daughter and I took a ferry ride here to join a rubbish collection team of volunteers. A vast amount of rubbish - glass bottles, plastics, netting, food wrappers etc - was picked up. This beautiful natural environment is worth preservation
  • Can not rate this experience highly enough. I took the guided tour and there was enough time to wander on my own after. So many birds and the island itself is beautiful. The ferry there travels around the harbor and islands and is great for photos. There is no place to buy water or snacks on the island so be prepared for the day.
  • An amazing experience! The walks are really well marked and as soon as you are on the tracks you can see and hear birds... The volunteers are passionate people and they will take care of you for a visit. The shop has some good quality products and for a reasonable price. If you like nature, don't miss it while in Auckland.
