Rangitoto Island, Auckland Central

4.7
#3 of 13 in Nature in Auckland Central
The youngest island in the Auckland volcanic field at just 700 years old, Rangitoto Island makes a prime spot for an island hike. The moderately challenging trek up the 260 m (850 ft) volcano rewards you with fantastic views of the blue water, Aukland, and other islands nearby. The plant life on the island is impressive: over 200 species of trees, plants, and flowers call the island home, including several varieties of orchids and ferns. Its special geography as a young volcanic island means that you get to see many stages of its development, including raw lava fields and scrub. • This is an outstanding place to visit. Take the tractor driven tour to the top of the volcanic mountain. Spectaculular views everywhere. Unususal flora unique to this island.
  • Just over 600 years old, Rangitoto Island is Auckland’s youngest volcano and is yet the most active in the Auckland Region. It was declared pest-free in 2011 and now is a paradise for birds. You can trek to the summit, or walk over to neighbouring Motutapu Island and stay there in a Batch for a night. Rangitoto is truly a paradise for birds and people.
  • Very important tip: Take the earliest ferry you can. The island gets very crowded and the wildlife hides. While the summit is a worthy goal, give yourself time to explore more of the island. There is a side trip to the caves, and other trails to explore.
  • Rangitoto Island is one of Auckland’s 48 volcanoes. 25-minute ferry ride from the CBD, Auckland. Enjoy walking tracks, lava tunnels and some of the best views in Auckland. The shortest and most popular route to the summit takes an hour or add extra for exploring breathtaking lava caves! At the summit enjoy 360-degree views of the harbour. Or you can paddle to Rangitoto Island on a sunset kayaking tour. Magical!
  • The walk itself is actually pretty tricky (not because it's tiring but obviously because of its volcanic presence. The ground is very uneven so make sure you where the right foot gear. The actual walk itself is pretty boring but the views from the top are completely worth it. I would definitely recommend visiting the lava caves, it's a short trip but it's really cool being able to walk through the pitch black caves (if you're not too claustrophobic). Ferry is very reasonably priced to!
