#3 of 12 in Museums in Auckland Central
With exhibits that span from the first Polynesian explorers to today's seafaring heroes, New Zealand Maritime Museum provides an in-depth look into the country's rich nautical history. You can take a free guided tour or study the artifacts, timelines, photos, and information boards at your own pace. In addition to the reconstructed and preserved ships found inside the museum, you'll notice some interesting vessels--including the Rapaki, a 1926 floating steam crane--sitting in the harbor outside. For a small extra fee, you can enjoy a one-hour voyage on board the Ted Ashby, a reproduction of a ketch-rigged stow. If you need to fuel up before or after your visit, head to one of the many nearby waterfront eateries. • There is not a lot for the seasoned tourist in Auckland. This Museum was very interesting and reflected the history of Auckland. Excellent displays especially the Migration section.  more »

  • this is amazing, you must see in Auckland, The museum has different types of boats built by Maori and other tribe. it is constantly evolving. every holidays they have great activities for the kids. this is super educational.
  • Much bigger than it appears. It has buildings that extend down the wharf. If you go through everything plan on spending a few hours. I especially liked the info on the Lighthouses, but there is information for all different seafaring aspects of history for the area. Worth while to bring your kids too. Great family experience.
  • There is a wealth of historical information both recent and past that is on display here. From the replica of the cabin of the ship my father came to New Zealand on in 1956 to our most recent history of yachting success. The museum showcases our deep affinity to the ocean and our heritage.
  • Right next to the Viaduct. The museum starts with different variations of Maori boats, and then pictures and stories of pre and post world war boats, and the finally the modern boats. There's also a section on the Americas Cup and Sir Peter Blake. Great experience!
  • It's a nice place. They have a few activities in here to keep some kids busy. It's great if you are just curious about the New Zealand waters. Also is a great way to kill time, if that's what you want.
