With exhibits that span from the first Polynesian explorers to today's seafaring heroes, New Zealand Maritime Museum provides an in-depth look into the country's rich nautical history. You can take a free guided tour or study the artifacts, timelines, photos, and information boards at your own pace. In addition to the reconstructed and preserved ships found inside the museum, you'll notice some interesting vessels--including the Rapaki, a 1926 floating steam crane--sitting in the harbor outside. For a small extra fee, you can enjoy a one-hour voyage on board the Ted Ashby, a reproduction of a ketch-rigged stow. If you need to fuel up before or after your visit, head to one of the many nearby waterfront eateries. • The museum showcases the different types of boats, from old age to present time. Takes around 1 hour to see the entire place. There are some areas for interactive learning for children and groups. Overall a okay place to visit if you have time to pass.
  • Great museum and the galleries are very interesting. It shows NZ's maritime heritage as well as pacific maritime history. Worth a visit
  • Must see place for Auckland visitors , especially if you love history and museums. Free entry for residents. Lot of boats starting from primitive models to advanced racing boats on display. Detailed descriptions. Models of ships that carried the passengers from Europe to NZ was good, and the interiors are well done.

For locals who live in NZ admission is free. For tourists there is a minimal fee. There are free lockers where you can keep your bags while viewing the displayed items.
  • Very well organized museum presenting NZ maritime history. It is free to enter if you live in AKL. Need a proof of residence showing shows your home address.
