Learn about New Zealand's rich history at Auckland Museum, serving as both a major cultural institution and a war memorial. Designed in the 1920s as a commanding neoclassical temple, this structure features an impressive copper dome, added in 2007. The ground floor, dedicated to the Auckland area's natural and military history, houses impressive displays of Maori artifacts, including a war canoe and a carved meeting house (which you can enter only after removing your shoes). The upper levels feature more military exhibits and a display about the region's volcanic fields, including a fascinating simulation of an eruption. • . (08/2017) A must visit location in Auckland. Provides good insight into the history of New Zealand. Awesome lightening arrangements which lit whole building during festivals and celebrations. Well maintained. Helpful staff. It is recommended to keep at least half day in your schedule completely enjoy the museum.
  • This museum is great! Various showcases such as cultural history, a memorial dedicated to the NZ soldiers and much much more! It's also great that you can enter for free if you are an official New Zealand citizen. I recommend it, it's great! Oh, and the volcano eruption simulator is one of my favourite attractions there, it's a must-see!
  • I love visiting the museum, it is an iconic building surrounded by lovely grounds, my son and I loved the wildlife photography exhibition. There is always something interesting to see no matter how many times you visit. Highly recommend a visit.
  • Great museum. An amazing visiting exhibition with the nature wildlife photo exhibition. Totally worth the visit.
  • Night at the Museum - we're up from Wellington for the weekend and saw this advertised via an excellent website advising what's on for kids. Brilliant experience although our moko is a little too young to stay for the whole evening. Highly recommended - great night out for young and old.
