Garden on National Significance

Recommend by Lonely Planet

The Giant's House - A historic Akaroa house with original artworks, terraced gardens with sculptures and mosaics. Very Unique. A creative feast and a wonderful experience. Romantic secluded and quiet, but only a few minutes walk to the centre of Akaroa.

The Giant's House was the first bank managers house in Akaroa, built 1880 of totara and kauri. It is grand in size, proportions, and features. Elegant and comfortable, it is designed and decorated in the french style. Being the home of an artist it balances and contrasts the historic and contemporary. Both the house and terraced gardens are full of surprises -expect the unexpected at The Giant's House!

The Giant's House has featured on top television programmes and in numerous house/art/garden magazines. The house has many extraordinary features - a grand entrance hall with mahogany staircase imported from France, original open fireplaces, beautifully proportioned rooms, a conservatory with mosaic floor, a large sunny sheltered verandah, quirky bathrooms, bright yellow farmhouse kitchen, comfortable large bedrooms with unique artistic features and artwork throughout.
A visit to The Giants House represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Akaroa trip itinerary maker to plot your vacation.

  • Fabulous place to visit, certainly a hidden treasure. So much thought and passion has gone into this garden, certainly one not too miss. Everywhere you turn there is artistic inspiration  more »
  • We visited The Giants House on a cruise stopover at Akaroa. The sculptures were amazing and we took lots of photos posing with different sculptures. The gardens were also lovely.  more »
  • This is quite a quirky attraction but worth visiting. The mosaics around the garden are so unusual and artistic but the main pleasure for us was the fabulous garden and show of colourful flowers.  more »

  • An amazing labour of love. This garden displays the dedication and love the owner/artist has for mosiacing and gardening. It's magical and a must see if you're in Akaroa. Easy to find, just ask a local when you get there.
  • You've never seen anything like it and you'll kick yourself if you miss it. Worth the money and so so cool! If you're anywhere near Akaroa it's a must see!
  • Quirky place. Loved the vibe but a little pricy. Not the friendliest interaction with the artist. We were asking questions and she kept asking us if we read her pamphlet. Of course we read it, we are just trying to strike up a conversation.
  • Absolutely fantastic spent a couple of hours here enjoying the many different sculptures the wonderful gardens and amazing views.
  • Amazing garden and themed sculptures, would've loved to see inside the historic house too! Not the cheapest to visit but I can see why given how much work has gone into the place.
