Lovely setting and stunning architecture. Some areas have French translations, but not many, so it's definitely more interesting if you speak French. Very spacious and airy in the museum. Spent a coup...  more »

A right nice place than this cultural center. Permanent and occasional exhibitions, concerts and media. a nice mix between modernity and tradition with the contemporary architecture of the place which has the boxes traditional and arrows fetieres all facing the ocean.

Amazing art and architecture. The building's are justifiably famous, and I was quite surprised to find such top quality contemporary art. I also liked the garden walk with it's explainations of local mythology.

It is important to know the history of the country you visit. An excellent art exhibition.

Iconic museum and art gallery, with focus on the South Pacific.

Beautiful space, unique and very worth seeing. The staff were extremely friendly, even providing bug spray when noticing I was being bitten.'the art exhibits are fantastic. There is a bit of construction going on at the moment, but still worth a visit.

Worth visiting if you are in Noumea, the cultural centre has three sections - a brief history of Melanesian culture in the Pacific, a cafe and library and a living culture / learning centre. The complex by Renzo Piano on the ridge is a high architecture take on the vernacular hut complex of the Aire Coutume (customary area) at the centre of the bay. Still, there is a sense of "otherness" to the centre, physically separated from Noumea and wedged between an airport and golf course, inaccessible by sea, no-where else reflected neither architecturally nor in culture on the island (that we experienced).

Where to stay in Noumea

There are few budget options in Nouméa, but a good selection of mid-range hotels. Most are concentrated in Anse Vata, at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, where you'll find palm-fringed beaches and plentiful bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. For something a little more central, consider one of the comfortable hotels around Place Des Cocotiers. The picturesque square is close to the marinas and cathedral, and makes a great base from which to explore the city.
