Saint Joseph's Cathedral, Noumea

#30 of 52 in Things to do in Noumea
Church Tourist Spot
Dedicated to Saint Joseph, the Catholic Saint Joseph's Cathedral serves as one the island's landmarks, dating back to the 19th century. Architects scrapped the original idea of including traditional spires fearing damage from cyclones, and instead endowed the stone building with large stained-glass windows and an intricately carved pulpit, altar panels, and confessional. Don't be discouraged if you find the main door closed upon your arrival. Make your way to the side doors, which remain unlocked throughout the day. • The cathedral is an impressive sight high on a hill overlooking the city and well worth the steep climb to view its interior.  more »
  • I have visited many cathedrals and to find this one was a surprise, not much to look at but such a lovely feeling inside very peaceful and restful. So close to heart of Noumea.  more »
  • Quite close to the café part of Centre Ville. I always love visiting cathedrals, so they are all special to me and I love that there is always someone in them. Great view form outside, as it sides on ...  more »

  • Closed in Jan 2017 for repairs. The structure looked amazing and a statue of Joan of Arc on the outside was astounding. Wish I could have gone in.
  • It was under some kind of maintenance, so I was not able to get into there ! Such a shame ! But I definitely took some great pictures
  • A nice piece of architecture that can be walked to if you arrive on a cruise.
  • On our holiday in December 2015 (New year's eve at 8.00pm) my partner proposed marriage to me on the front steps of the Cathedral of Noumea and this was very powerful spiritual experience. We also attended Church on the Sunday with my partner knowing French and I didn't, I somewhat knew what was going on throughout the service and the people there were very inviting and warming, if you are not religious I would recommend that you go.
  • Solemn. Sacred. Serenity. A small historical Catholic church which is very interesting. The religious artifacts inside is something not to miss. Easy access by foot, parking can be challenging.

Where to stay in Noumea

There are few budget options in Nouméa, but a good selection of mid-range hotels. Most are concentrated in Anse Vata, at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, where you'll find palm-fringed beaches and plentiful bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. For something a little more central, consider one of the comfortable hotels around Place Des Cocotiers. The picturesque square is close to the marinas and cathedral, and makes a great base from which to explore the city.
