Saint Joseph's Cathedral, Noumea
(3.9/5 based on 75+ reviews on the web)
Dedicated to Saint Joseph, the Catholic Saint Joseph's Cathedral serves as one the island's landmarks, dating back to the 19th century. Architects scrapped the original idea of including traditional spires fearing damage from cyclones, and instead endowed the stone building with large stained-glass windows and an intricately carved pulpit, altar panels, and confessional. Don't be discouraged if you find the main door closed upon your arrival. Make your way to the side doors, which remain unlocked throughout the day. Plan to see Saint Joseph's Cathedral and other attractions that appeal to you using our Noumea vacation trip planner.

  • Although beautiful from the outside, the interior is closed for renovation. No one was able to tell me exactly what was being done or when the church would re-open. It's up a hill and the view is not ...  more »
  • This Catholic Church is worth visiting because ot the fact that it is the Cathedral and also because someone becomes acquainted with it's architectural style.
  • Sadly when we got there the Cathedral was shut but luckily for us the contractors opened the side door and we saw enough to see it was quite exquisite. Can't say anymore than that but it looked wonder...  more »

  • On our holiday in December 2015 (New year's eve at 8.00pm) my partner proposed marriage to me on the front steps of the Cathedral of Noumea and this was very powerful spiritual experience. We also attended Church on the Sunday with my partner knowing French and I didn't, I somewhat knew what was going on throughout the service and the people there were very inviting and warming, if you are not religious I would recommend that you go.
  • Solemn. Sacred. Serenity. A small historical Catholic church which is very interesting. The religious artifacts inside is something not to miss. Easy access by foot, parking can be challenging.
  • Noumea city deep, on a small hill. The location overlooking the city. In the Catholic Church, in a very beautiful and solemn atmosphere identities.
