  • As someone interested in the human history of the land, I was disappointed in this museum. There are mostly only anthropological displays about the buildings, tools, plants and a few associated traditions of the indigenous peoples of New Caledonia (ground floor) and Vanuatu, Salomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and the rest of Oceania (upper floor). There is nothing about the chronological history of the occupation of these islands prior to or after the arrival of Cook. It's super cheap at 200 francs for adults (about $2 USD) for entry. Most activities in New Caledonia will cost you 10x to 100x more. They will tell you at the entrance that all displays are in english, japanese, and french. But this is not true. Approximately 1/2 of displays will also have english translations. 1/3 will have Japanese. There is a bit more human history to be had at the Tjibaou Cultural Center. I highly recommend that place, particularly if you can read French or have time for an English tour, which they offer there.
  • Value for money Museum. At 200 New Caledonia francs it was reasonable and showed a lot of their history and of the Pacific countries.
  • Beautiful collections, and a warm welcome. Some activities are organized throughout the year...

Where to stay in Noumea

There are few budget options in Nouméa, but a good selection of mid-range hotels. Most are concentrated in Anse Vata, at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, where you'll find palm-fringed beaches and plentiful bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. For something a little more central, consider one of the comfortable hotels around Place Des Cocotiers. The picturesque square is close to the marinas and cathedral, and makes a great base from which to explore the city.
