Ile aux Canards island, Noumea

4.0
#2 of 11 in Nature in New Caledonia
Island Nature / Park
Famed for its coral reef, the tiny Ile aux Canards island remains a snorkeling paradise just a stone's throw from the mainland. See exotic marine life up close and personal, or just stay on the sand and relax. Rent a beach chair and umbrella, and pick up a few snacks at the cafe serving light meals and drinks. Remember to wear reef shoed to avoid cutting your feet on washed-up coral. If you can, avoid visiting when a cruise ship arrives to take adavantage of the best spots on the sand. Plan to see Ile aux Canards island and other attractions that appeal to you using our Noumea itinerary builder.

Where to stay in Noumea

There are few budget options in Nouméa, but a good selection of mid-range hotels. Most are concentrated in Anse Vata, at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, where you'll find palm-fringed beaches and plentiful bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. For something a little more central, consider one of the comfortable hotels around Place Des Cocotiers. The picturesque square is close to the marinas and cathedral, and makes a great base from which to explore the city.
