Lighthouse Island
The first metal lighthouse constructed in France, Amedee Lighthouse Island sits inside a World Heritage-listed lagoon. The island features white-sand beaches and teal-blue waters and lures snorkelers and swimmers with its coral reefs, where tropical fish, turtles, and starfish await. When you visit the lighthouse, wear comfortable shoes and climb 247 steps to the top to take in views of the lagoon. Be aware of the island's snakes, and look out for their tracks in the sand. Where to stay in Noumea

There are few budget options in Nouméa, but a good selection of mid-range hotels. Most are concentrated in Anse Vata, at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, where you'll find palm-fringed beaches and plentiful bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. For something a little more central, consider one of the comfortable hotels around Place Des Cocotiers. The picturesque square is close to the marinas and cathedral, and makes a great base from which to explore the city.
