  • Money isn't much, but Temple is golden. A Hindu temple and a Buddhist temple on the same site is interesting. There were many visitors or due to early morning.

  • From Tamelja in Patan we walked. Before the bridge a bit blukanuli and the guys showed us a short school road to Durbaru along the river. When we rolled into town, as it seemed to us to be in the right place, then coincidentally met a narrow street is a miracle. As it turned out, one of the gems not only Patana, but throughout Nepal. From the outside you would not even ... Describe the meaning no need to see.

  • This charming temple/monastery is worth your attention. Even the entry door is distinctive and photo worthy. Entry is 50 rupees. The brass work within is exceptional. No leather shoes are allowed inside, but slippers are available. If Google maps isn't working well, be sure that you've downloaded Maps.me Kathmandu because it works offline and has been excellent for navigation.
  • Just after a short drive out of Kathmandu you can visit the Hiraṇyavarṇa Mahāvihāra . Informally called The Golden Temple in Patan. It is a historical vihara (Buddhist monastery) situated in Patan, It is known locally as the "Golden Temple" and it is famous for feeding rats. Although I did not see any rats while i visited. Perhaps that happens early in the morning or evening. The temple ground was fairly clean. children ware playing there and people ware praying. With the 50 rupee fee you contribute to maintenance and restoration of this relatively small temple
  • This beautiful historical Buddhist monastery is a must see when in Patan. I had a little trouble finding it. I didn't have phone service and hadn't thought to download the offline map. I am glad I persisted. Wow! What a beautiful experience.

  • The beauty of its structure and the fascination of its environment are things that must be experienced personally by being there. On an especially chilly winter morning, as I walk through the narrow lanes of Patan, I observe that the side lanes are still and silent. I know that they will be filled with throngs of people in an hour’s time, and numerous shops will have opened for business, their colourful fare on display. However, it’s only 5:00 a.m. and I am but a solitary walker. But, as I go through an ancient door guarded by two stone lions and enter the precincts of Hiranyavarna Mahavihar (The Golden Temple), I realize that I have come to a place that is bustling with life. I am told that the Nitya Puja (the main deity worship) takes place at 3:00 a.m. every day! Monasteries where Buddhist disciples live and learn their scriptures are known as ‘Vihars’. This is more than that –this is a ‘Mahavihar’ (maha: large). Of all the 18 vihars in Patan, the Hiranyavarna Mahavihar is the largest and most important, and one in which religious rites as written in the holy sutras (religious texts) are followed exactly as prescribed. This is according to Asta Man Bajracharya, one of the vihar priests whom I meet in the Hiranyavarna Mahavihar Digi (community building) which houses the Chandamaharoshanaya Goddess (also known as Sankata). People seek her blessings to be free from bad grahas and dashas (preordained circumstances according to astrological configurations).
