  • Entry fee to the museum was 250 Rupees which included a very informative 20-minute video which was in English. Rooms in the museum contain various items and photographs of Sherpa life and culture. The...  more »
  • The Museum pays tribute to the children of the Sagarmatha (Everest): the Sherpa people residing in Khumbu at the foot of the snowy giants of the planet, people of good, deep faith and physical strength appropriate to the circumstances of subsistence. In a makeshift room they present an audio-visual exhibition of the area of the Khumbu and customs of the Sherpa people, what you admire in the following halls with exhibition of objects and pictures and the reproduction of a housing. Part of this life Sherpa has found in the path to Namchee Bazaar and even more if they trek back to Base camp, as you've noticed that here there are NO roads for vehicles, the dusty, Rocky and snowy gaps are traversed by yaks, mules and donkeys loaded with goods and the same Sherpas under the name of "porters" play this trade. Since children are accustomed to this and we have also seen seniors with the heavy burden on their backs... is painful to take this tough work to earn their daily bread. The Sherpas are those who guide climbers to the Everest... who set up the camps and those who placed bridges and climbing stairs... great work that the Western world ignores or passes unnoticed... who again and again have conquered the peak of their sacred mountain, as set out in the room of this museum with countless photographs of the amount of Sherpas who have performed this feat (some of them without oxygen); one that at the top of Mount Everest has been removed the coats and perched! is also photographed bare-chested. With certainty, I affirm that the Sherpas are children and masters of the mountain. In this section I have been proud to see the photo of the Mexican Badia Bonilla Luna, who has crowned seven placed eight thousands including Everest. Enjoy the Khumbu, a land full of nature and mysticism. LIFE... is a trip!

Where to stay in Khumbu

Khumbu offers a broad spectrum of accommodations, from luxury hotels to basic lodgings. Expect greater luxury at lower elevations, with things getting more pared down as the altitude climbs. Some avid trekkers stay near the Everest Base Camp, which ensures easy access to tours through the region. Make sure you carry Nepalese rupees, as most lodgings only accept cash in the local currency.
