Where to stay in Lumbini

As with many important places of pilgrimage, you'll find a good mix of accommodations in Lumbini, with very basic options alongside some luxury hotels. Plenty of accommodations sit to the east of the temple complex, in the area surrounding Lumbini Market Road. Palatial hotels share streets with humble hostels, with both styles offering good access to the main attractions in town. Consider staying in one of the monasteries here for a particularly atmospheric and authentic visit, with dorm rooms available.

  • When thinking of my visit I thought that it might be some sort of powerful spiritual awaking for me. When the visit happened it was just one more sight to see. Pay 200 rupees, leave the shoes at the rack and look around. The temple did not have a profound impact on me. It seemed more like a museum in fact. The other people there were just tourists like me. Get a selfie and move on. It was good though, maybe that's what the Buddha would want.
  • This temple sits on the site of the the Buddha's birth, according to Buddhist scholars. You will need to buy your entrance ticket 50m north of the gate to the Sacred Garden. At the gate you must remove your shoes. (A spare pair of socks may be a useful item as there is a fair bit of walking round the garden to see everything.)

  • A historically important place. Palace and birth place of Lord Gautam Buddha (Siddhartha Gautam is his name before enlightenment). This place provides waves of calmness, peace. The bricks on the picture are from 300-700 BC.
