  • One of the most sacred Hindu temples of Nepal – Pashupatinath Temple is located on both banks of Bagmati River on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu. Pashupatinath is the most important temple dedicated to god Shiva. Every year this temple attracts hundreds of elderly followers of Hinduism. They arrive here to find shelter for the last several weeks of their lives, to meet death, be cremated on the banks of the river and travel their last journey with the waters of the sacred river Bagmati, which later meets the holy river Ganges. Hinduists from every corner of Nepal and India are arriving here to die. It is believed that those who die in Pashupatinath Temple are reborn as a human, regardless of any misconduct that could worsen their karma. The exact day of their death is predicted by astrologers of the temple. If you are attracted to the places where the spirit of death can be felt, then consider Pashupatinath as your first destination. It is a temple with special atmosphere of death; death is present in almost every ritual and every corner of it.

  • 1000 rupees/$10 USD — foreigners aren’t allowed in temple area and aren’t allowed in the temple. They think we foreigners are there to be ghouls and be entertained by watching families cremate their loved ones. Police randomly demand to see your ticket, you get barked at randomly, you’re targeted by peddlers who follow and stalk you. Sadhus cat call and peddle pay-for-photos, men hound you to hire them as guides. It was a depressing place to be, they only want foreigners’ money. It’s really sad, they kept trying to direct us to the cremation area and we were there to see the culture, history, architecture and temples. To learn and appreciate. Instead we were harassed by police, peddlers, and sadhus. It felt more like Disneyland peddling cremation. So many beautiful places to visit in Nepal that are welcoming and peaceful. I was harassed at this site continuously, never had this issue anywhere else in Nepal. Take note—this was off season, I can’t imagine what it would be like during the busy tourist season.
  • The most famous Hindu temple of in Kathmandu. It's very clean n rush is managed quite well. There are many other places near temple to see n enjoy. One river is also running behind the River where cremation is done. Firstly foreigners or other community people is not allowed or Hindus with leather belt or purse is not allowed.
  • We threw a dart at the map of the world and hit Kathmandu Nepal...so off we went to check it out. Simple fact is our time spent here wasn’t long enough. Many temples to see but since then they had a major earthquake which sadly did a huge amount of damage to some of the more historic sites and homes. The Nepali people are very kind and come across as a extremely happy people the happiest we have come across on our travels thus far hence Buddhist countries are always friendly in my own personal opinion. The Nepali people are always smiling and polite, we could learn a lot from them. The hospitality was simply amazing, the local food was scrumptious mostly Asian Indian influences. You could quite easily spend months in this beautiful country wandering around the nooks and grannies visiting villages etc it is a very spiritual place. For those of you are wanting to experience a charming and peaceful country either on a budget or not this was a very affordable inexpensive holiday, in fact I read that Nepal is one of the cheapest destinations in the world to visit. The one thing I didn’t like so much was the locals do spit on the ground a lot but soon realised it was no big deal and moved on. I would dearly hope to get another opportunity to go back and visit Nepal soon.
