Shree Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

4.2
#3 of 803 in Things to do in Nepal
Pay a visit to the sprawling complex of Shree Pashupatinath Temple, the oldest temple in Kathmandu, and one of the most sacred Hindu shrines. Dedicated to Pashupati, an incarnation of Shiva and patron of animals, the numerous temples and shrines of the complex straddle both sides of the Bagmati River. While the main temple and courtyard can only be accessed by Hindu devotees, visitors can explore the rest of the grounds. On a tour of the famous temple, you might encounter meditating sadhus, deer, and monkeys, or even witness a funeral pyre, as the temple attracts the elderly who come here to die and be cremated in the sacred river. • Driven away by taxi from the Thamel and it was super. Very authentic, you could see real cremations and when they took the stairs upwards, seen very many free running wild monkeys. A great place that exudes a great atmosphere. Many religious people and just a great atmosphere. Look at this place.

  • Pashupatinath Temple is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the four most important religious sites in Asia for devotees of Shiva. You must visit if you're in Kathmandu.
  • This place is a disaster for tourists! Especially the Guides are very bad and ask way too much money. I aggreed beforehand on 1000 rupees, but he stopped halfway (not climbing the park on the hill). And than said I was free to give more money because he was on education, the money goes to rebuilding the earthquake damage, etc. He also asked me my ticket and didn't give it back! He also suggested that I should take a photo with three saddhu's (painted Hindu men with long beards and hair) without saying that should be paid later on. Also, I was asked by other man if I needed any drugs or hookers. What is wrong with these people?? Totally not what I see in the rest of Nepal! The place itself is indeed interesting from a Hindu perspective. But why not let them burn their dead in peace, without making it into a touristic freak show?
  • I don't have words to explain the beauty of temple. Don't be cheated outside the temple. You can see lord Shiva easily . Don't miss the evening Aarti on bagmati river just behind the temple. One time opportunity.
  • It's really feels good to be able to visit the his temple. The architectural design is south eastern styled and suites the country.I like the politeness of the pashupati guide and help us reach to see the god very nicely.
  • The park with benches in this place is Perfect to sit when you feel low. Love this vibe of this place! The Bhajans in the early morning are one of the best things you'll ever listen to.

Where to stay in Kathmandu

Only a few establishments in Kathmandu suffered severe damage in the 2015 earthquake, which means that you can choose from a wide range of sleeping options. From luxurious hotels to inexpensive but cozy lodges, the city offers a suitable place for every type of budget. The neighborhood of Thamel contains most accommodations favored by foreign visitors, including basic guesthouses, budget hotels, and boutique establishments offering deluxe suites. For some of the least expensive options, look along Durbar Marg, a busy street just a few blocks from Thamel.
