Shree Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

4.2
#3 of 802 in Things to do in Nepal
Pay a visit to the sprawling complex of Shree Pashupatinath Temple, the oldest temple in Kathmandu, and one of the most sacred Hindu shrines. Dedicated to Pashupati, an incarnation of Shiva and patron of animals, the numerous temples and shrines of the complex straddle both sides of the Bagmati River. While the main temple and courtyard can only be accessed by Hindu devotees, visitors can explore the rest of the grounds. On a tour of the famous temple, you might encounter meditating sadhus, deer, and monkeys, or even witness a funeral pyre, as the temple attracts the elderly who come here to die and be cremated in the sacred river. • This temple is quite old, great care is required. Like the other buildings in the earthquake-damaged places.

  • This is a historic temple badly damaged in part by the earthquake. The temple itself is accessible to those who are practicing Hindus however, I wasn't barred from entering or asked at the time of entry. The temple itself is beautiful however, they do not allow any photographs. The temple is also a site for cremation so you can see families performing last rites and ashes being floated into the river.
  • We came here yesterday to have a look at this famous temple. We followed the locals to the entrance but we were stopped by officials to buy a ticket. We thought it's ok since we're not Hindus and are not here for praying. But they wanted 10$ each and that was simply out of our budget. Also even if we would have paid the 20$ we wouldn't have been allowed to go inside. I really think it's sad that they can't be honest and just tell us that they don't want any atheists or Christians on the site. Or if that's not the problem and we anyways can just see it from outside, charge us something anyone can afford. We were pretty disappointed also because this happened to us a lot of times in Asian countries and we wanted to get all the cultural impressions. Sadly that's not possible.
  • One of the important place of Hindu religion. Best place to visit if you are here, don't miss to visit this place. Although nearby surrounding is not too good due to lack of management and cleanness. You can see awesome architecture at this place and This is the one of the world heritage site listed by UNESCO
  • It is one of the famous temple of lord shiva. If anyone pray here from his deep heart then his pray is fulfilled. It is very beautiful and silence place. It is not allowed to take picture inside the temple.
  • You are not allowed to take any pictures from inside. You cannot wear shoes inside. A holy place for Hindus to worship Lord Shiva. Quite a massive architecture. The main temple is made mostly of silver and gold.

Where to stay in Kathmandu

Only a few establishments in Kathmandu suffered severe damage in the 2015 earthquake, which means that you can choose from a wide range of sleeping options. From luxurious hotels to inexpensive but cozy lodges, the city offers a suitable place for every type of budget. The neighborhood of Thamel contains most accommodations favored by foreign visitors, including basic guesthouses, budget hotels, and boutique establishments offering deluxe suites. For some of the least expensive options, look along Durbar Marg, a busy street just a few blocks from Thamel.
