Shree Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

(4.2/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Pay a visit to the sprawling complex of Shree Pashupatinath Temple, the oldest temple in Kathmandu, and one of the most sacred Hindu shrines. Dedicated to Pashupati, an incarnation of Shiva and patron of animals, the numerous temples and shrines of the complex straddle both sides of the Bagmati River. While the main temple and courtyard can only be accessed by Hindu devotees, visitors can explore the rest of the grounds. On a tour of the famous temple, you might encounter meditating sadhus, deer, and monkeys, or even witness a funeral pyre, as the temple attracts the elderly who come here to die and be cremated in the sacred river. • This temple is very interesting to see to better understand the rites of cremation for Hindus. The temple is dedicated to the incarnation of Shiva. Being in India in 2013 and 2014 I don't have time to go to Ganges (benares) so I found it worth the money despite the side a little business, obligation to take a guide (the temple is Hindu but still) and if you want to pose with the Sadhus it is against a little something... Despite that it is really very rewarding to discover this place.

  • Beautiful temple to visit nearby the city centre of Kathmandu. A guide will tell you more about this place and its history. Don't miss the great view from the top of the hill on the other side of the sacred river, from where you can see the 'circle of life' of the place. Beware monkey bites ;) A must see, definitely.

  • wonderful...incredible...u will find all reasns to be on earth... i went to Nepal on April jst few days before the earthquake... The temple has a very beautiful lingam...it is believed that once shiv ji took the form of a wild boar and came out from underground on that place... i liked the temple so much that i visited 2 times... First day i visited by standing in a long line and reached at around 10 am...and the second i went to the temple at around 4 am. At that time no one was there... it was very nice... on that day i came back to India and jst after 3 days the great earthquake hit the place... The shocking thing was tht evrthing broke, even the house jst a few metres from the temple but nothing happened to that temple...its all in place... It showed the presence of SHIVA...Thnk Gd he saved PASHUPATINATH...Evryone must visit once in a life....
