Pullahari Monastery, Kathmandu

4.7
Rest and recharge at Pullahari Monastery, an important center for Buddhist culture and tradition. Explore the colorful and mesmerizing architecture, then take a seat on the white marble veranda, admiring the complex and the hilly surrounding landscape. Although it sustained some damage during the 2015 earthquake, repairs are in progress to return the center to its former splendor. Join the meditation sessions, have a meal in the restaurant, and feel free to speak with the monks, who will gladly tell you more about the monastery. I have visited many times since 1995 and Pullahari there is "satisfaction guaranteed" for all the efforts you have to expose themselves in order to come up to the monastery. Even I prefer to stroll from Bouddha (it takes about 1 hour), but you can also hire a taxi from Bouddha-it costs about 400 Rupee one way or 600-800 rupees for the trip. Pullahari Monastery is the seat of Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche and about 180 monks. The site's "daily leader"-Khenpo Chokey Gyaltsen is not just very clever and erudite monk but also art connoisseur, gardener and environmentalist. You need to see the unique paintings in the Temple in the main building, Temple with Jamgon Kongtrul stupa with relics of the Third, enjoy great garden and the numerous stupas in the area. There is a small bar in the parking lot, where you can get a bit to eat and drink. I can really recommend to besød ¨ ge this amazing place!

I had the chance to visit this beautiful Buddhist monastery with my girlfriend and my son, accompanied and guided by the monk Kempo Chokey. When we arrived in the Kathmandu Valley heights and when we returned in this magnificent property, I felt first of all completely soothed, amazed, filled with gratitude and joy. The beauty of the architecture and paintings, the serene and joyful atmosphere that reigns in this place, the meeting small monks in training, discussions with the inhabitants of this place have been a special moment in my trip that I wouldn't miss for anything in the world. Next time I go back to Nepal, I shall not stay to a spiritual retreat. You will be pleasantly disoriented! Good trip!!

These days life in Kathmandu can be chaotic with traffic jams, pollution and crowds of people. But just half an hour's walk from Boudha, the magnificent Pullahari Monastery gives you peace and quite, ...  more »

I came to learn more about Buddhism and left feeling more self aware. Met amazing people. I stayed at Kopan for the duration of the course, 4 nights. I would bring healthy snacks such as fruits if you like to eat more frequently otherwise food is served 3 times a day. Also, there is a cafe that serves good filtered coffee and food. I liked the bookstore/library, things are reasonably priced compared to Thamel. Also, don't forget your towel, soap and toilet paper if you use it. Great place to learn.

Great if you're here on a Buddhist pilgrimage, skip if you want scenery or a cultural site, or if going without a good guide. Timings to see the hall are limited so try to find out from your guide beforehand (can be a test of how good your guide is. I missed the visit cos my guide didn't even know the timings..). Getting there is long and tedious because of the roads. The place is serene and quiet because there is absolutely nothing there

Nice place for peace and city view but couldn't enter the Gumba. Other than that nice place relax environment.

I have just finished a 10 day Mindfulness course at Kopan. Seriously, this place is amazing. The energy, the peace, the ability to learn and meditate and grow. I am grateful beyond words, thank you Kopan.

Where to stay in Kathmandu

Only a few establishments in Kathmandu suffered severe damage in the 2015 earthquake, which means that you can choose from a wide range of sleeping options. From luxurious hotels to inexpensive but cozy lodges, the city offers a suitable place for every type of budget. The neighborhood of Thamel contains most accommodations favored by foreign visitors, including basic guesthouses, budget hotels, and boutique establishments offering deluxe suites. For some of the least expensive options, look along Durbar Marg, a busy street just a few blocks from Thamel.
