Narayanhiti Palace Museum, Kathmandu

#1 of 8 in Museums in Kathmandu
Explore the history and enjoy the architecture of Narayanhiti Palace Museum, the former residence of the royal family. Designed in late Victorian style, each room in the palace takes its name from one of Nepal's 75 districts. Go through the reception hall, then see banquet halls, royal bedrooms, and the throne room, which resembles the architectural style of a Hindu temple. In the throne room, whose ceilings reach a height of 18 m (60 ft), you can see a monumental 14.5 m (48 ft) chandelier, as well as various paintings, stuffed animal heads, and photos of the royal family with other national leaders adorning the walls. In 2001, the royal family was massacred in mysterious circumstances, with bullet holes scattered across the palace's walls serving as stark reminders of the tragedy. Cameras and bags are forbidden, but you can keep your belongings in the lockers at the entrance. • You can definitely see the old school interior design of the previous King and Queen. Very retro! And no over designed to a museum.  more »
  • It s "is the royal palis until 2008, year or the monarchy has been abolished." very kitschy and ca smells good years 60 and 70. large pieces, especially the reception room and the throne room. a great time the site of the massacre of the Royal family in 2001 with traces of bullets. pleasant garden. Cameras and phones should be left at the entrance.

  • Formerly the king’s residence and now a museum, the palace has been left largely untouched (and it appears not to have been cleaned) since the 2001 massacre. It’s quite dirty inside and generally very...  more »

  • This is certainly an interesting place. Sorely lacking in historical details of the monarchy and what they accomplished. But artifacts, and historical items are in great condition. A bit more maintenance required. The palace is under army control and all rooms are heavily guarded. No photographs allowed. Cell phones, cameras and bags need to be checked in prior to entry. Outdoor massacre area was certainly very interesting to a lot of visitors. I personally found it to be least entertaining. Obviously, the massacre itself was pivotal to Nepal's history and opening up to tourism shortly after the Uncle took over the monarchy and after the end of the monarchy. Not much information about all that is presented. So if you see looking to learn something about the history of the monarchy, turn to several published books instead.
  • The famous place attached with the history of the shah dynasty ruling the country Nepal with the glorious history. This place was the official residence of the Royal family and after the country came with the federal state the as being a ceremonial king the king was overthrown from this palace and now converted into the palace museum which is now open for public to visit inside of the palace. This palace consists of the different valuable materials of the Royal family.
  • For me as a Foreigner it was kinda boring. No photos allowed. As a local I'm sure this place would be great. I just didn't find it very interesting.
  • Place to visit while you are in Kathmandu. You could see beautiful building, well decorated rooms according to district of nepal, different awards that were received by kings, some animals death body decorated in room and many more
  • An unbelievable sight. The former Royal family lived here up until 2008. The Palace will give you a glimpse into the life of the royals. I have never seen so many tiger pelts in my life. While most definitely opulent and far nicer than the living conditions of the average Nepali, the place feels dated. Security is really strict here. You can only visit on certain days and cameras are strictly prohibited. Plan accordingly.
