Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu

4.4
Step into the cultural history of Nepal when visiting Hanuman Dhoka, a long-time Hindu pilgrimage site. The location was heavily damaged by the 2015 earthquake that hit the region, though repairs have restored many buildings and reinforced others. Originally built with only one wing of the current area in the mid-16th century, the rest of the complex was added building by building by monarchs and ministers over the next three centuries. See where the royal family was housed for years, and walk through history to learn about Hindu beliefs. • The Hanuman Dhoka square is still a ruin since the devastating earthquake by 2015: the rear half of the space are not allowed to enter due to the risk of collapse, the famous 5-tier pagoda is now 2-speed (maximum), and the Museum is due to danger of collapse locked. However the restoration has started already, the first ensembles shine again in old glory. It is to be hoped that the expensive admission fees (at least RS 1,000) to be used also for the restoration.

  • This is beautiful and historical place one should visit. Kathmandu Durbar square was badly damage by the last earthquake (25 April 2015) but now rebuilding job has slowly begin. You can even enter Hanuman Dhoka Palace inside and look around from the ground (however museum is still close), it is one of my best place to go for sightseeing!
  • I have never been inside but it's a historically rich place and very popular amongst tourists.

Where to stay in Kathmandu

Only a few establishments in Kathmandu suffered severe damage in the 2015 earthquake, which means that you can choose from a wide range of sleeping options. From luxurious hotels to inexpensive but cozy lodges, the city offers a suitable place for every type of budget. The neighborhood of Thamel contains most accommodations favored by foreign visitors, including basic guesthouses, budget hotels, and boutique establishments offering deluxe suites. For some of the least expensive options, look along Durbar Marg, a busy street just a few blocks from Thamel.
