Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu

4.3
A small open-air Hindu temple with the largest stone carving in Nepal, Budhanilkantha features a 5 m (16.4 ft) long statue of Lord Vishnu carved from a single block of black basalt. This large reclining figure, nested in intricately carved coils of the cosmic serpent, rests in the middle of a round pool 13 m (42.65 ft) in diameter. Colorful flowers usually ornament this spectacular sight. At the base of Shivapuri Hill, the temple offers a sanctuary from a busy city life, about 20-30 minutes from Kantipath bus station by microbus. • First time saw such a huge statue of the Lord, apparently floating on the waters. Such ancient temples inspire devotion and good behavior, so highly recommend them.  more »
  • I went because I had read that the monks go to heal and to sing the statue to prevent wakes up but when I went I i.e. mid morning there were only a few faithful. I thought it was no big deal, I sent special charm, but is off the tourist circuits

  • Beautiful place, with a mystical atmosphere which builds respect for the locals who do their worship here. It is separated from the rest of Kathmandu, but go there and you will see that the temple will be quite crowded since the morning, especially on the weekends. Locals say that the sleeping Vishnu statue's eyes will open from 1 to 8 November, so you can go there to see by yourself. You need to take off your shoes and all leather products though and it might be awkward if you are not a Hindu, to go near the state with the other locals.
  • Very scenic place with a lot of local atmosphere. The large reclining statue of Lord Vishnu sleeping and floating in a bed of snakes is of course the primary highlight of this place. But also round it you can taste a lot nice culture.
  • -One of the popular Hindu temple.. - lord bishnu’s statue is also found.. -peaceful,wonderful place..
  • Its very holy and religious place and exactly the nice place for peace searcher.
  • Get enchanted by the serene life size idol of lord Narayana. Behold the beauty!!

Where to stay in Kathmandu

Only a few establishments in Kathmandu suffered severe damage in the 2015 earthquake, which means that you can choose from a wide range of sleeping options. From luxurious hotels to inexpensive but cozy lodges, the city offers a suitable place for every type of budget. The neighborhood of Thamel contains most accommodations favored by foreign visitors, including basic guesthouses, budget hotels, and boutique establishments offering deluxe suites. For some of the least expensive options, look along Durbar Marg, a busy street just a few blocks from Thamel.
