Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu
(4.2/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
A small open-air Hindu temple with the largest stone carving in Nepal, Budhanilkantha features a 5 m (16.4 ft) long statue of Lord Vishnu carved from a single block of black basalt. This large reclining figure, nested in intricately carved coils of the cosmic serpent, rests in the middle of a round pool 13 m (42.65 ft) in diameter. Colorful flowers usually ornament this spectacular sight. At the base of Shivapuri Hill, the temple offers a sanctuary from a busy city life, about 20-30 minutes from Kantipath bus station by microbus. • A must visit if you are in Kathmandu. Bit far from the city though worth a visit. Some great views of the hills from the temple.
  • It's good place to know about Bishnu temple and to see around the nice views. It's in center part of Kathmandu .
  • Every morning you can witness the investiture of Vishnu, where the statue is washed and dressed as priests.

  • This is an amazing posture of shree Vishnu bhagwan...This Vishnu ji is often called as a budhanilkanta and is completly carved in a single stone emerged from the water...This pose that vishnu sleeps here is completly different...he always sleeps in anandasan i.e, one hand beneath the head but here he is sleeping with his hands straight. This pose is called as yogasan...this pose is seen in two temples... in this budhanilkanta temple, Nepal and in the temple of Ramanathaswamy, Rameshwaram...
  • A wonderful place dedicated to Lord Vishnu as he is seen lying on Sheshanag(ancient snake of Lord Shiva). The same statue smaller in size is built by the King of Nepal in Pashupati nath temple as well due to a curse on him as told be locals.
  • The temple is less crowded comparing to others. A giant Vishnu statue submerge on the water, many other pilgrims organize rituals nearby temple. It would be great to see different activities at s place.
  • This is such a amazing religious place to visit. It is said that the statue was found by digging .
  • An elegant view of the sleeping god, Lord Vishnu, whose idol, lying in the middle of a small artificial pond, is absolutely undeniable epitome of Nepali architecture. Moreover, the small market of mostly street vendors and the overview of the forest above with sometimes (mostly in summer) a view of a small falling stream cools your heart though the river in the west is a hell of pollution.
