Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu

4.6
#1 of 794 in Things to do in Nepal
Religious Site Tourist Spot
One of the largest and most important structures of its kind in the country, Boudhanath Stupa holds a spot on the World Heritage List and serves as an icon of the city. Pay a visit to this holy site and you'll find it an epicenter of Tibetan Buddhism in the region, as the complex features a number of monasteries around it. Marvel at the stupa's massive base, topped with a sizable dome and a towering manadala, the golden triangular spire at the top. You can also admire the colorful statues around the dome and the tower's mysterious painted-on eyes. Rumor has it that circling the stupa can help to free you from your sins. The devastating earthquake in April of 2015 severely damaged the structure, causing the removal of the entire top portion and calling for a massive reconstruction project. • Our arrival was with taxi, usual by narrow streets all the time uphill. If it rains the roads could be impassable, turns everything into mud. To reach the facility you must put down a few hundred, but really it wasn't expensive and the money hopefully in the repair. The stupa is besteig from one side - and accessible. Super thing. When we were there all was repaired. Around the stupa, there are a variety of small shops, the Windowshoppen is worth. Above the shops (roof terrace), there is coffee / restaurants with stunning views and of the stupa. Must-try! Last of the stupa is distributed in the district Buddhist monasteries with exiled Tibetans. With us, however almost all doors were closed. Also, the facilities are not as nice as in Tibet and not so easy to find.

  • A lovely place as always. Definitely one of my favourite place on earth. Can be visited anytime of the day and you can experience a different atmosphere. Simply marvelous!
  • Always the best experience, such a beautiful place and art. Everybody should visit this place once in lifetime. People around the place and that music makes it more heavenly feel, for the best experience climb top of the museum. #peace #Buddha
  • I like the feel that I get whenever I go there. Tibetan music in the background, worshippers offering their prayer and the Boudhha standing still and smiling back. This place is always full of people and still one can feel the sense of calmness.
  • Unesco heritage site in Kathmandu, Nepal. The only heritage site well constructed after earthquake. The lights in the evening are amazing n beautiful. A must visit for everyone.
  • Beautiful Buddhist temple. We were there during the evening, when several Buddhist were also making their rounds. In the pooring rain! But still everybody was peacefull and relaxed, including the candles that they still kept burning. Clean place.

Where to stay in Kathmandu

Only a few establishments in Kathmandu suffered severe damage in the 2015 earthquake, which means that you can choose from a wide range of sleeping options. From luxurious hotels to inexpensive but cozy lodges, the city offers a suitable place for every type of budget. The neighborhood of Thamel contains most accommodations favored by foreign visitors, including basic guesthouses, budget hotels, and boutique establishments offering deluxe suites. For some of the least expensive options, look along Durbar Marg, a busy street just a few blocks from Thamel.
