Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur

4.5
#2 of 22 in Things to do in Bhaktapur
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Centuries old and seemingly frozen in time, Changu Narayan represents one of the oldest temples in Nepal and an exquisite example of Licchavi-era architecture. Dedicated to the god Vishnu, the temple sits at the top of a hill surrounded by a forest. Walk inside to see a figure of Vishnu's consort Garuda, or stroll around the building to spot sculptures relating to the god's various incarnations. Put Changu Narayan and other Bhaktapur attractions into our Bhaktapur vacation planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

Where to stay in Bhaktapur

Peaceful and less crowded than Kathmandu, Bhaktapur lies close to the international airport, making it a good base for a Nepal vacation. You'll need to pay for a ticket to enter the city, but the proceeds from foreigners' visits help with reconstruction and restoration of Bhaktapur's countless historic buildings. Choose from a variety of accommodation options, most of them cozy, family-run guesthouses and inns situated in traditional buildings with modern amenities. Since vehicles are prohibited in Bhaktapur, plan to explore the tranquil town on foot. Fortunately, most of the hotels and guesthouses cluster around the historic center.
