Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue, Yangon (Rangoon)

(4.1/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Myanmar’s only synagogue, Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue stands the test of time, beautifully maintained to serve the small Jewish community of the city. Constructed in 1893 and tucked into a busy street, the building is a listed heritage site of the city and a remnant of the country’s colonial era. Once a thriving place of worship, the synagogue now serves fewer than 20 members, but still opens its doors for services and as a museum. Visit in the morning, admiring the Torah reading table, ornate balconies, and delicate white and blue decorations depicting the Star of David motif. • The Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue is well worth a visit, Jewish or not. It speaks to the diverse, cosmopolitan past of Yangon when it had a sizable, well-to-do a Jewish community originally from Iraq.
