Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue, Yangon (Rangoon)
(4.1/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Myanmar’s only synagogue, Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue stands the test of time, beautifully maintained to serve the small Jewish community of the city. Constructed in 1893 and tucked into a busy street, the building is a listed heritage site of the city and a remnant of the country’s colonial era. Once a thriving place of worship, the synagogue now serves fewer than 20 members, but still opens its doors for services and as a museum. Visit in the morning, admiring the Torah reading table, ornate balconies, and delicate white and blue decorations depicting the Star of David motif. • Small, modest but fascinating. Not easy to find as the outside street is as chaotic as the synagogue is serene. Difficult to believe it is being maintained by a jewish population of only 24 or so.
  • It's easy to miss Myanmar's only Synagogue located in busy downtown area. It was awarded Blue Plaque by the Yangon Heritage Trust as one of the city's cultural heritages.
