Kandawgyi Park, Yangon (Rangoon)

3.6
#1 of 12 in Parks in Yangon (Rangoon)
A popular outing spot for locals with plenty of shady trees, Kandawgyi Park provides water and greenery in downtown Yangon. Join the locals with a picnic or a leisure walk among the well-manicured gardens. In the middle of the 110 hectare (272 acre) grounds lies a lake with a circumference of 8 km (5 mi). Stroll across the long wide boardwalk over the water to admire water lilies, a family of black swans, and the iconic gilt royal barge--now a classy floating restaurant. Some street vendors sell refreshments. The park is a popular venue for concerts. • We thought we find a beautiful park, we have been disappointed together very badly maintained, the path in the Woods around the Lake is almost completely crushed. Get the details on the quality of the lake water, littered with trash. We have the impression of being 50 years back. The monument to double-headed dragon which is located in the middle of the Lake, is in fact a restaurant that closes between 15 hours and 18 hours, and who does not visit.

  • It was a pleasant enough park, nothing special about it except it has a nice view of the Shwedagon Pagoda. We went at sunset & got some nice pics.  more »
  • The park is dirty. Visitors are few. I didn't see anything interesting for me. But lies near Shwedagon Pagoda, it is possible to walk to park if you visited Shwedagon before  more »

  • Well, it's the one and only place to walk around throughout the long wooden passages over Kandawgyi lake. It's pretty good to take fancy photo with natural scenes. Ah... there is also a swimming pool where I often go swimming. Moreover, there are many things that will please you and just go find it out....
  • Scenic and peaceful. Of the several entrances to the park, I recommend the one in front of the Yangon Zoological Garden entrance, which leads directly to a boardwalk that offers amazing views of the lake, the Kandawgyi Hotel, and the imposing Karaweik Palace. Be careful at the boardwalk as there are loose wooden planks and large gaps between them. There aren't a lot of places to run to when it starts raining so it's a good idea to bring an umbrella or a poncho. Bring food and water if you plan to spend many hours here as there's very few food places nearby.
  • Absolutely loved it! Only sorry we hadn’t set aside a half day to take a leisurely stroll. Would love to go back with a good book and a cold bottle of water.
  • Should choose if you like to do morning exercises and you don't have an idea to go anywhere in downtown .
  • Away from the traffic and its exhaust, a green (also from water) place which has to be visited for great views, fresh air (dependent on the time) diverse and many restaurants, and some peculiar events. In contrast to Inya lake, KDG lake offers more accessible areas, parks, benches and trees for a picnic though it closes at nights.

Where to stay in Yangon (Rangoon)

It can be difficult to find decent budget accommodations in Yangon, especially downtown, where rooms are usually small and booked months in advance. Look farther away from the city center for cozier budget options, often with complimentary breakfast included. The Kandawgyi lakeside features a number of high-end establishments.
