Built on a large scale by a king needing to impress and rebuild after defeat in battle, Mandalay deserves exploration. Though given an almost mythical air in a poem by Rudyard Kipling, the city was only established in 1857, and ruled by only one other king after the death of its founder, King Mingdon. Still, the city yields much more than the uninspiring architecture and hectic roads that dominate first impressions: sightseeing in Mandalay will reveal hidden temples, pagodas, mosques, and markets. While not as old as its reputation would have you believe, the city still represents the last flurrying displays of power, style, and wealth of the kings of Upper Burma. As such, it contains plenty of treasures, bold architecture, and a continued relevance to the contemporary nation state. Use our Myanmar trip planner to arrange your visit to Mandalay and other destinations in Myanmar.

Where to stay in Mandalay

Look at the area to the southwest of the royal palace for the main choice of accommodations in Mandalay. Some cushier options sit on the main thoroughfares, offering rooms with balconies overlooking the core architectural and historic sights. A number of basic hotels lie close to the main train station, while budget-friendly guesthouses concentrate in the area around 25th Street. Farther to the west, some hotels have views of the river, while to the east lie lodgings with convenient proximity to major regional highways.
