A 19th-century wooden monastery built on stilts, Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery displays a collection of Buddha statues and miniature pagodas from different parts of Tibet and Myanmar. Although the monastery is best known for its monks who trained cats to jump through hoops, you're more likely to see cats lazing about than preforming any stunts. Nevertheless, a walk around the impressive collection of lavish and highly ornate statues of sitting and reclining Buddhas and pagodas makes for a worthwhile visit. The grand golden chair, intended for only monks to sit on, stands out and evokes admiration. Worth a visit even if you have been to a lot of religious sites. Built of teak and housing a museum of shrines. As the old kingdoms fell with the unification of Burma shrines and statues were moved... more »

There were no cats doing any persuasion of jumping :). All very sedate and looking very Zen. But cute. This monastery is teak and is reached from the river, through long alleyways of covered market..... more »
-
The wonderful teak wood is beautifully displayed and carved and enhanced. The Buddhas here are again an inspiration with a story. more »

Beautiful monastery with a real authentic atmosphere. Seems like locals come here to pray, it was interesting and charming to see these fully loaded boats coming with 15 burmeses each. Don't expect to see cats (well yeah there are four or five walking around, but not more). It was a long time ago that the monk used to teach cats to jump in circles. Now, they are just resting near the temple.

Wonderful monastery located in southern Inle lake. The interior of the monastery is home to many beautiful shrines with intricate carvings. The monastery also offers spectacular views of the lake and floating gardens. A very peaceful and serene experience.
