Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, Taunggyi

3.4
#3 of 13 in Historic Sites in Shan State
A 19th-century wooden monastery built on stilts, Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery displays a collection of Buddha statues and miniature pagodas from different parts of Tibet and Myanmar. Although the monastery is best known for its monks who trained cats to jump through hoops, you're more likely to see cats lazing about than preforming any stunts. Nevertheless, a walk around the impressive collection of lavish and highly ornate statues of sitting and reclining Buddhas and pagodas makes for a worthwhile visit. The grand golden chair, intended for only monks to sit on, stands out and evokes admiration. • Built on a pylon above the Lake, is entirely on wood and really big. The collection of wooden Buddhas has about 200 years old and the most interesting in Nepalese style, Inwa, Bagan or shan. Before training the cats to make them jump, when he died the head monk they thought that it was not an activity would be for a wet train cats, but the name has been

  • Part of our guided tour of Inle lake, we were looking forward to see the jumping cats, but the monk who taught them and his cats are long gone.We did see one cat and I asked him if he could jump but I...  more »
  • The temple itself is largely not seen. The cat is playing with a lot of cats will do nothing except no. The last place of the tour boat arrived and left a lot of time until sunset here is a little breather to play with the cat. Hover over the more fun a little bit of cat food will be able to spend some time.

  • A big building made of wood on a lake. Nothing more. The inside is plain and there's nothing going on but tourists running into each other as they pretend they are taking good photos of wood.
  • Go early morning. Quiet. Few friendly cats roaming around
  • Used to be way cooler with the jumping cat show, but it's still not everyday you can visit a floating monastery.
  • Quite unique as a "floating" monastery. The tacky souvenir shops slapped on the side are a shame.
  • It's a nice monastery in the middle of the lake, previously famous because of their jumping cats. Nowadays there are still many cats around, but they don't jump. Still, the temple is nice, and very peaceful inside. Outside there are shops.

Where to stay in Taunggyi

The city of Taunggyi possesses a handful of places to stay, with quite a variety between them. Never straying too far from the main north-south thoroughfare, the accommodations include upmarket resorts with golf courses and pools, simple hotels, hostels, and family-run guesthouses. Most international tourists stay in town for a night before carrying on their journey to the caves and lakes to the south, or Mandalay to the north--which has a good deal more lodgings.
