Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, Taunggyi

3.3
#3 of 13 in Historic Sites in Shan State
A 19th-century wooden monastery built on stilts, Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery displays a collection of Buddha statues and miniature pagodas from different parts of Tibet and Myanmar. Although the monastery is best known for its monks who trained cats to jump through hoops, you're more likely to see cats lazing about than preforming any stunts. Nevertheless, a walk around the impressive collection of lavish and highly ornate statues of sitting and reclining Buddhas and pagodas makes for a worthwhile visit. The grand golden chair, intended for only monks to sit on, stands out and evokes admiration. This temple is very interesting because constructed entirely of teak. From the outside it looks like a market, because we will get through to a real market Hall. Typically a monk sits in front of a mat with tea and chat with visitors. The most famous are the cats jumping, although apparently don't do more for some time. Actually you will encounter several cats playing and you are photographing. See, even because we pass during the ride to the Lake.

I visited there on July 14 morning. It was nice place in Inle and one of the must see place for tourist due to it's ancient wood carving and antique style monastery. It's lovely place as well.  more »

Very quietly situated on stilts in the middle of the water. Separate atmosphere and beautiful authentic images. Not so great, but very rewarding.

It's a nice monastery in the middle of the lake, previously famous because of their jumping cats. Nowadays there are still many cats around, but they don't jump. Still, the temple is nice, and very peaceful inside. Outside there are shops.

Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, Inle Lake. Luckily there is no Jumping cat show anymore. The essence of this temple is a very good collection of Buddha image shrines in different styles.

Nice Monastery, we came here hoping to see the jumping cats but did not see it.

A great monastery standing in the Inle Lake. Getting there just after lunch, very beautiful and quite inside. A monk was pacing and thinking alone, really peaceful scene.

I couldn't watch a jumping cat show. But I had underestimated the Buddha statues there before I actually saw them.

Where to stay in Taunggyi

The city of Taunggyi possesses a handful of places to stay, with quite a variety between them. Never straying too far from the main north-south thoroughfare, the accommodations include upmarket resorts with golf courses and pools, simple hotels, hostels, and family-run guesthouses. Most international tourists stay in town for a night before carrying on their journey to the caves and lakes to the south, or Mandalay to the north--which has a good deal more lodgings.
