Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, Taunggyi

(3.1/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
At Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, see the five statues representing Buddha, so thickly covered with golden leaves as to be barely recognizable. Over the years, men--only men are allowed to place leaves on the statues--have venerated the statues by adorning them with golden leaves. You can see how the statues once looked--before they took distorted hourglass shapes--by looking at the historic photos hanging from the walls of the pagoda. At the boathouse next to the pagoda, see a ceremonial boat shaped like a hintha bird. Once a year, four of the five statues are placed on the boat and taken on a procession around the lake. Shops selling Shan-style costumes and other traditional items surround the pagoda. • The Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda is a pagoda retracing the route of 5 Buddhas by water on Lake Inle. The place is invaded from stalls to tourists and this building has little attraction in itself. Average, I visited mainly because there is the local market next door.
