Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, Taunggyi

3.2
#4 of 13 in Historic Sites in Shan State
At Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, see the five statues representing Buddha, so thickly covered with golden leaves as to be barely recognizable. Over the years, men--only men are allowed to place leaves on the statues--have venerated the statues by adorning them with golden leaves. You can see how the statues once looked--before they took distorted hourglass shapes--by looking at the historic photos hanging from the walls of the pagoda. At the boathouse next to the pagoda, see a ceremonial boat shaped like a hintha bird. Once a year, four of the five statues are placed on the boat and taken on a procession around the lake. Shops selling Shan-style costumes and other traditional items surround the pagoda. This is one of the most famous pagodas of the Lake and is part of the classic round. Inside there are five Buddha completely covered in gold leaf to seem formless object. Very striking from the outside with the Golden stupa.

A must when you visit the shores of the Lake. Very nice site, original with its 5 Buddhas that we guess most below the layers of gold deposited by the faithful-

The temple is amazing, very nice and care, both inside and outside. Here are a few Buddhas (five) that due to the amount of influx of faithful and pilgrims who glued sheets of gold on them, have been completed to becoming something of a Ferrero Rocher, i.e. deformed gold balls. You have some very pretty pictures hand painted which tells the loss of one of the ancient Buddhas since overturned the barge where to take them in procession. You can also visit the barge in a dock annex, mythological bird of Buddhism.

Where to stay in Taunggyi

The city of Taunggyi possesses a handful of places to stay, with quite a variety between them. Never straying too far from the main north-south thoroughfare, the accommodations include upmarket resorts with golf courses and pools, simple hotels, hostels, and family-run guesthouses. Most international tourists stay in town for a night before carrying on their journey to the caves and lakes to the south, or Mandalay to the north--which has a good deal more lodgings.
