Floating Gardens, Taunggyi
Categories: Gardens, Nature & Parks
One of the region's most iconic sites, Floating Gardens provide sustenance and livelihood for a significant portion of the local Intha people. Made from compressed masses of hyacinth flowers and other aquatic plants, these fertile gardens rest atop the surface of Inle Lake and allow for the cultivation of tomatoes, beans, and other vegetables. Take a boat ride on the lake to see the gardens rising and falling with the water level, making them resistant to floods. As you explore, you'll pass huts and homes on stilts, and get a chance to see the surrounding mountain scenery from a different perspective. Put Floating Gardens on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Taunggyi trip itinerary planner.

Fascinating to see how the locals created their own fertile grounds to raise tomatoes and all sorts of other vegetables. Of course only reachable by boat.
We did the floating gardens as part of a half day trip. Amazing to see what can be done and grown in the middle of the lake. The smell of tomatoes was fabulous!
You don't need much time, just tell your guide that you'd like to drive through the floating gardens. It's quite interesting to see all the tomatoes simply being grown right on top of the water.
