Floating Gardens, Taunggyi

4.3
#2 of 7 in Things to do in Taunggyi
One of the region's most iconic sites, Floating Gardens provide sustenance and livelihood for a significant portion of the local Intha people. Made from compressed masses of hyacinth flowers and other aquatic plants, these fertile gardens rest atop the surface of Inle Lake and allow for the cultivation of tomatoes, beans, and other vegetables. Take a boat ride on the lake to see the gardens rising and falling with the water level, making them resistant to floods. As you explore, you'll pass huts and homes on stilts, and get a chance to see the surrounding mountain scenery from a different perspective. One of the obligatory stops at the Lake are these gardens, generally planted with tomatoes. If you find a helmsman patient, will circle the rows and you will stand on the boat to photograph plants. Around the gardens there are interesting fishing villages and ortolani, all on stilts. A curiosity that they explained in a restaurant, the tomatoes are not very flavorful, due to excessive water.

Where to stay in Taunggyi

The city of Taunggyi possesses a handful of places to stay, with quite a variety between them. Never straying too far from the main north-south thoroughfare, the accommodations include upmarket resorts with golf courses and pools, simple hotels, hostels, and family-run guesthouses. Most international tourists stay in town for a night before carrying on their journey to the caves and lakes to the south, or Mandalay to the north--which has a good deal more lodgings.
