Floating Gardens, Taunggyi
(4.4/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
One of the region's most iconic sites, Floating Gardens provide sustenance and livelihood for a significant portion of the local Intha people. Made from compressed masses of hyacinth flowers and other aquatic plants, these fertile gardens rest atop the surface of Inle Lake and allow for the cultivation of tomatoes, beans, and other vegetables. Take a boat ride on the lake to see the gardens rising and falling with the water level, making them resistant to floods. As you explore, you'll pass huts and homes on stilts, and get a chance to see the surrounding mountain scenery from a different perspective. Put Floating Gardens on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Taunggyi trip itinerary planner.

  • No interest. Avoid. Nothing typical, if not just a food market. Supposedly artisanal memories come mostly from Thailand... with prices for tourists.

  • The people of Inle Lake has invented a way of growing vegetables, especially tomatoes, very industrious. On a bed of seaweed is added a mass of Hyacinths fished from the bottom of the shallow lake and soil up to form a humus of about 1 meter to crops, everything is anchored with wooden poles fastened at the bottom of the Lake. Ingenious!

  • The ride is magical, one walks in the dugout between the rows of vegetables on the water, silence, birds, peace
