Floating Gardens, Taunggyi
(4.4/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
One of the region's most iconic sites, Floating Gardens provide sustenance and livelihood for a significant portion of the local Intha people. Made from compressed masses of hyacinth flowers and other aquatic plants, these fertile gardens rest atop the surface of Inle Lake and allow for the cultivation of tomatoes, beans, and other vegetables. Take a boat ride on the lake to see the gardens rising and falling with the water level, making them resistant to floods. As you explore, you'll pass huts and homes on stilts, and get a chance to see the surrounding mountain scenery from a different perspective. Put Floating Gardens on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Taunggyi trip itinerary planner.

  • I am so amazed at this place. Our boat weaved through the narrow waterways to go see the floating gardens which plant tomatoes and many other vegetables. The gardens do actually float and moves around...  more »
  • Fascinating in the boat sitting on smaller and larger waterways to flit and grow tomatoes and other vegetables left and right to see. Amazing!

  • Only water, no country? Obviously, no problem for the tens of thousands people who live on and with the Inle Lake. Take mud, water algae and MOSS and thus make carpet floating a kind. On this, one uses tomatoes, beans and flowers. The "floating gardens", which you of course visited during a boat ride on INLE are finished. Worth a visit - recommendable
