Mrauk-U, Myanmar

4.1
The capital of a former kingdom of the same name, Mrauk-U still shows signs of its past prosperity. During the kingdom’s peak--between the 15th and 18th centuries--a number of administrative and religious buildings sprouted up in the area. See the stone-brick temples and sanctuaries around the palace, and ask a local to recount to you the area's most famous legend. According to the tale, the first prince of the kingdom was born from an egg laid by a female monkey. To visit Mrauk-U on your trip to Mrauk U, use our Mrauk U trip itinerary builder website .

  • We visited Mrauk U in February this year, had it signed long ago. This was our second trip to Myanmar and we decided to go. It is a beauty of a site, there are people who compare him to Bagan, but it is not comparable. Bagan is much more monumental, Mrauk U, although it has fewer temples, has the charm of its location, in a jungle area, still little exploited by tourists. It is a bucolic place. It is not see only temples, but enjoy watching the local lifestyle, rent a bike and wander through temples or the market. To us was what we liked most of Myanmar. Reach is not easy, it requires days. We first took a plane from Yangon to Sittwe, did night and in the morning we took the public boat "Shwe Pyi Tan"(fast boat que sólo sale determinados días, porque las otras lanchas públicas tardan mucho más; tres horas frente a las aproximadamente 6 que tardan las otras) up to Mrauk U. Sale of Sittwe on Sundays and Tuesdays at 7 in the morning, and back to Sittwe, on Mondays and Thursdays. We were three day and a half, and two of them hired with a very helpful guide. The first to see more remote temples which only can be accessed by car, and also to locate us (which is very necessary!), and the second to go to the chin villages. Kyaw Moe is called and you can find it in mraukukyawmoe@gmail.com was lovely and speaks very good English! But asking for it when you arrive, you are safe, there is a list with the official guides in the area in all hotels. I definitely recommend Mrauk U until it begins to fill with tourists!

  • On our second trip to Myanmar after 22 years, we were able to visit this beautiful region that it was not possible to see in 1994 (classic route Yangon, Mandalay, Inle Lake). Little tourism, temples of great charm and hospitality in the villages Chin very warm. In these villages are living the last elderly women with her face tattooed, who welcomed us into their home with great cordiality. The boat trip between these villages is very nice. We could do an interesting tour of the temples on the first day, that of villages with a very prepared (Myint Zaw + 95 9 252 629 382), which we found thanks to the reviews on TripAdvisor.

  • Hard to get there, but worthy the visit! This was my favorite place in Myanmar! It takes the whole day to get there by bus from Yangon, but once there, it is a beautiful experience! The ruins are just...  more »
