Mrauk-U, Myanmar
(4.7/5 based on 85 reviews on the web)
The capital of a former kingdom of the same name, Mrauk-U still shows signs of its past prosperity. During the kingdom’s peak--between the 15th and 18th centuries--a number of administrative and religious buildings sprouted up in the area. See the stone-brick temples and sanctuaries around the palace, and ask a local to recount to you the area's most famous legend. According to the tale, the first prince of the kingdom was born from an egg laid by a female monkey. Mrauk-U is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Mrauk U Edition.

  • We have just returned from Mrauk U, a beautiful expanse of pagodas and temples in the middle of the bright green rice fields. We had some difficulties in finding directions therefore I write some useful info (the lonely dates and things have changed a lot): the easiest way is to arrive in Sittwe (practically only by plane via Thandwee or Yangon) and from there take a boat or car to get in Mrauk U. The normal boat leaves in the morning and takes from 2 to 7 hours (depends on the type of boat, every day of the week talking a different part). By car it takes about 3 hours and you can stop at the Mahamuni Temple on the road. With the help of a guide of Mrauk U transportation can be arranged directly on the day you arrive in Sittwe, in order to arrive directly at Mrauk U (always with car or private boat). Mrauk U Board of at least 2 full days there, so devote a day to the temples and villages Chin. The guides are local boys, very kind, which support the small local economy by buying an every place small objects or food. In particular, our guide, Ko Soe, is a 30-year-old boy who speaks perfect English and is highly competent and very very friendly. For those interested I leave email and phone (we contacted the day before we arrived and responded within minutes and arranged all transportation): rakhineguidemrauku@gmail.com Cel.: 09421761802

  • Getting here does take effort hence why there's less tourists. I got here by flying in to Sittwe and then caught a boat from Sittwe up to MraukU which took 4 hours (by a private boat, it wasn't a spee...  more »
  • In mrauk you comes after a comfortable boat navigation. We drove from sittwe at 15.20 and arrived at 21.30. We pass next to a series of extremely poor villages who travel to these areas to fish. In mrauk arrive only 4000 tourists a year but they're already building an airport that's going to be ready in three years. The temples in the area date back to the 15th and 16th century. I've been there in February and it was quite warm.

  • Will be difficult finding anything cheaper in Mrauk U. You get the basics here with a bit more. Free breakfast; hot water, towels, water. Interior is very dated and a bit dirty. Dim lighting and terrible Wi-Fi. Location is decent and staff are helpful. Lots of bugs everywhere in Mrauk U and same at this hotel. They're still building new units here and seems the workers are housed in some of the existing rooms so expect to hear construction noise during the day and loud music at night. I recommend checking out Prince Hotel.
  • All the palace is not finish but it's a good place to stay in Mrauk
