Thanboddhay Paya, Monywa

4.5
#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Sagaing Region
Religious Site Tourist Spot
See around 500,000 carved Buddha figures of different sizes at Thanboddhay Paya. Two white statues of elephants guard the entrance, which leads you to a colorful pagoda dating back to the 14th century. In addition to numerous Buddha images, you can see massive statues along the aisles. Admire the 40 m (131 ft) high golden stupa in the center, and the prayer hall next to it. All the buildings the central stupa are topped with the smaller golden stupas, and you can get a great view over the scene by climbing the watchtower. Around the temple, feed the fish in the pond and see turtles swimming through the water. • Monywa-an unusual place! And the pagoda, which is not possible, deserves to be visited. Inside we have not visited (login $3), walked around. Husband climbed on top, while we children sat in the shade of a tree. On a sunny day walking around the pagoda is unreal, steps are very hot. There is a tower, which produces superb photo, but leads a spiral iron staircase. My husband said it was the most expensive for its legs picture.

  • Built in the middle of the 20th century by the wealthy inventor of the tiger balm, this temple is, like the Tiger balm garden of Singapore and Hong Kong, kitsch. Nevertheless the visit on the inside reveals thousands of small Buddhas. A must see.

Where to stay in Monywa

Monywa offers a small but reasonable selection of accommodation options, all providing a comfortable night's sleep. The city sees a relatively small number of international visitors, but a handful of lodgings serve all of the city's guests, ranging from budget guesthouses to three-star modern hotels. Look toward the river and central General Aung San Road for most hotels, with some offering bike rental, outdoor swimming pools, and free Wi-Fi. Your most economical choices lie back toward the bus station, although these prove less convenient when you start to plan your Monywa sightseeing.
