Bodhi Tataung, Monywa

3.8
#8 of 19 in Things to do in Sagaing Region
Take in a surreal and astonishing view at Bodhi Tataung, a renowned Buddhist region and monastery dominated by a 129 m (424 ft) tall golden standing Buddha. Built in 1995 to show gratitude to U Narãda, who built the original monastery, this is the second largest Buddha statue in the world, containing 31 internal stories, with an elevator allowing passage to the viewing point at the top. You can see many other astounding sights at the monastery, including a grove of more than 9,000 bo trees, a 69 m (225 ft) high golden pagoda, and thousands more depictions of the Buddha across the area. Consider taking the stairs to the top of the gigantic Buddha, where the paintings on each floor evoke the feeling of ascension and enlightenment. Put Bodhi Tataung into our Monywa tour planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

This reclining Buddha is described as the largest reclining Buddha in the World; that it may be but it is nothing special and is dwarfed by the Buddha behind it. I would drive slowly by but not bother...  more »

It's not hard to be the biggest but to be the largest. That encounter them here. But also the second highest and longest Buddha is impressive to look at. The most beautiful is the standing Buddha. You can climb the 33 floors as yet only by stairs-the elevator is still work in progress. The lower floors are for the underworld, hell and that is clearly visible to the murals. After that, the what is happier, highlighted by nirwana on the top floor. Which floor you reach after more than 500 steps and is not accessible to the public. The upper floors are not quite completely finished, though we are working hard to complete the murals. The reclining Buddha, you can also walk in but there is little to see. At the time of writing is a huge sitting Buddha under construction.

Where does not look into this place, wherever the statue and one more than the other! We had to drive only to the most popular. Recumbent Buddha allows you to make beautiful photo, sitting until the period of construction, and in the standing Buddha, you can even go and climb a 31 floor. Until all the raised ladders, but already underway is the construction of a lift. Climb fairly easy. On each floor is pretty large space with small statues and paintings on the walls. First floor-is painting, which shows a hell. Sometimes pictures are appalling, but our children are not scared and we even going on correctness of life and punish bad behavior. Up to "paradise," we have never reached (climbed only 9 floor). Exit the statue of nowhere, Windows very dirty and they can not see anything, so decided not to spend time on the climb. Inside was comfortable enough, not stuffy, not hot. Immediately near gardens sitting under the umbrellas of the Buddhas. There are thousands of them! Take a stroll in this garden will fail, things are not bad, but make a couple of wonderful photos you can share very much.

Where to stay in Monywa

Monywa offers a small but reasonable selection of accommodation options, all providing a comfortable night's sleep. The city sees a relatively small number of international visitors, but a handful of lodgings serve all of the city's guests, ranging from budget guesthouses to three-star modern hotels. Look toward the river and central General Aung San Road for most hotels, with some offering bike rental, outdoor swimming pools, and free Wi-Fi. Your most economical choices lie back toward the bus station, although these prove less convenient when you start to plan your Monywa sightseeing.
